BOSTON--()--Refineries and pipeline closures due to Hurricane Harvey have caused numerous gas stations in the Southeastern United States to run out of fuel. The hardest hit cities are currently Miami (30% of stations tracked by GasBuddy are without fuel), West Palm Beach (29%), Fort Myers-Naples (20%), Tampa (13%), and Orlando (9%)*.

GasBuddy, the popular smartphone app connecting motorists to crowdsourced gas station data and information, has launched its “fuel availability tracker” to help consumers affected by hurricane-related gas outages. The GasBuddy tracker alerts motorists to nearby stations and the availability and price of motor fuels, power outages and other essential services at these stations.

The GasBuddy app proved critical during Hurricane Harvey when record numbers of motorists downloaded and utilized the app over the one-week period that covered Labor Day weekend and beyond; and was utilized by federal and local governments to assess the situation in gasoline terms.

HOW THE TRACKER WORKS

When a consumer is near stations that have no gas or power, the GasBuddy app will automatically display NO GAS or NO POWER next to the station on the list screen, and the station will be highlighted in red on the map screen.

Consumers are encouraged to report the status – “Has Fuel,” No Fuel,” or “No Power” – at any gas station to help others. This tool is also available on web via http://tracker.gasbuddy.com.

GasBuddy will continue to send in-app push notifications to consumers on gas prices and availability in affected areas.
