SLD’s LaserLight Technology Awarded Top Honors at LightFair International

Company Receives Technical Innovation Award and Best in Category Award for SSL Chips & Modules

GOLETA, Calif.--()--SLD (Soraa Laser Diode, Inc.), a world leader in commercialization of visible laser light sources, was presented two prestigious recognitions at the 2017 LightFair International Innovation Awards, on May 9th. The company’s LaserLight SMD won both the Technical Innovation Award and the Best in Category Award for SSL Chips & Modules.

Professor Shuji Nakamura, SLD co-founder, CTO and 2014 Nobel Laureate in Physics, stated “We are deeply appreciative that our LaserLight technology has received these extraordinary recognitions by the LightFair Innovation Awards committee. Laser diodes are lighting's future as they are droop-free, and can be combined with phosphors to safely produce highly directional output with superior delivered lumens per watt compared to other light sources.”

SLD was a first-time LightFair exhibitor, which is the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference. LightFair features more than 25,000 attendees and more than 500 exhibitors. In the last nine months, the LaserLight SMD has received three additional recognitions:

  • 2017 Sapphire Award Finalist, Illumineer of the Year
  • 2017 PRISM Award Finalist from SPIE Photonics Media
  • Inclusion in the 2016 IES Progress Report

SLD’s LaserLight SMD utilizes proprietary and patented semi-polar GaN laser diodes, combined with advanced phosphor technology, and packaged into a 7mm X 7mm surface mounted device (SMD). The LaserLight SMD delivers novel properties compared with other light sources by combining the benefits of solid-state illumination such as minimal power consumption and long lifetime, with the highly directional output that has been possible only with legacy technology. With the laser diode emission focused to a small spot on the phosphor where it is converted to white light, the LaserLight SMD delivers drastically higher luminance than LEDs and enables safe, highly collimated white light output. The LaserLight SMD provides vastly superior optical control with miniature optics and reflectors, along with high efficiency fiber optic transport and waveguide delivery.
