BOSTON--()--Invaluable, the world’s leading online marketplace for buying fine art, antiques and collectibles, and University Archives, one of the world's leading purveyors of autographed books and manuscripts, today announced online bidding on Invaluable for University Archives’ May 9 auction, featuring documents from the estate of renowned dealer Robert Batchelder. The auction will take place on May 9, 2017, at 10:30am EST, with online bidding available on Invaluable.com and through Invaluable’s mobile app.

The auction, entitled “Fine Manuscripts, Books, and Relics Including Items from The Robert Batchelder Estate,” features many items that are new to the autograph market. Highlights include documents from the Robert Batchelder estate, including letters from Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Richard Wagner and Thomas Edison. The auction also features material from the Senator Charles B. Farwell collection, which has not been offered for sale in over 140 years.

“Our upcoming auction features an incredible selection of autographs, manuscripts, books and historical relics, and we are honored to also offer the tremendous collection from the estate of Robert Batchelder as part of this sale,” stated John Reznikoff, President of University Archives. “We are looking forward to making these exceptional objects available to online bidders around the world through our partnership with Invaluable.”

Robert Batchelder was among the most important dealers of the 20th century. He began his passion in autographs and historical documents in the late 1960's and each piece from his collection includes his original description indicating the noted retail price which could have been 20 years ago. His highly diverse background and achievements include a long list of important sociétal memberships, including an honorary member of the Society Cincinnati, a member of the Manuscript Society, the ABAA (Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America) and the ANA (American Numismatic Association), among others. A portion of the commission on the Batchelder lots will be donated to the Alzheimer’s foundation.

Specific highlights being offered as part of the auction include an aviation archive featuring Charles A. Lindbergh, Orville Wright and Amelia Earhart, matted with photographs and important relics from each (estimated at $5,000 - $6,000) and a rare free franked address leaf by Abraham Lincoln as a member of Congress (estimated at $4,500 - $5,000). Also on offer are two hand-drawn maps documenting "Stonewall" Jackson's attack at Chancellorsville (estimated at $5,000 - $6,000), an Alexander Hamilton signed Treasury Department ALS (estimated at $7,000 - $8,000), and a Robert E Lee early Civil War ANS, in response to James Mason's request (estimated at $5,000 - $6,000) , along with two important detailed original medical illustrations prepared for the House Select Committee on Assassinations detailing the trajectory of the first bullet that struck John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 (estimated at $4,000 - $5,000).

“Historical documents and autographs are one of the most popular categories on Invaluable, and we’re thrilled to work with University Archives to offer this wonderful collection on our marketplace,” said Rob Weisberg, Invaluable CEO.
