LONDON--()--According to the latest market study released by Technavio, the global coronary stents market is projected to grow to USD 11.94 billion by 2021, at a CAGR of close to 6% over the forecast period.

This research report titled ‘Global Coronary Stents Market 2017-2021’ provides an in-depth analysis of the market in terms of revenue and emerging market trends. This market research report also includes up to date analysis and forecasts for various market segments and all geographical regions.

Coronary stents or cardiac stents are small, expandable, tube-shaped devices made of stainless steel, which are placed in the coronary artery to supply blood to the heart and keep it open during the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). Currently, many manufacturers are outsourcing research to clinical research organizations, which is indirectly boosting the growth of the coronary stents market.

Based on the product type, the report categorizes the global coronary stents market into the following segments:

  • Drug-eluting stents (DES)
  • Bare-metal stents (BMS)
  • Bioresorbable stents

Drug-eluting stents (DES)

Drug-eluting stents occupied over 70% of the global coronary stents market in 2016, and are expected to continue its dominance through the forecast period,” says Srinivas Sashidhar, a lead analyst at Technavio for cardiovascular devices research.

DES are coated with drugs like paclitaxel, everolimus, and antiproliferative drugs and are used for the prevention of renarrowing, reblocking, or inflammation of the artery after stent implantation. The key vendors for DES are Abbott Laboratories that manufactures XIENCE PRIME, Boston Scientific that manufactures PROMUS Element, and Medtronic that manufactures Resolute Integrity.

Bare-metal stents (BMS)

Bare metal stents are mesh tubes made of thin metal wires of stainless steel, cobalt-chromium, platinum, nickel, or titanium. These stents require one month of dual antiplatelet therapy for a month after stent implantation. Cobalt alloy and platinum-chromium stents are the most widely adopted types of BMS, as they are strong, stable, corrosion resistant, and biocompatible. The key companies that manufacture BMS are Abbott Laboratories, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, and medium-sized or small companies such as Biosensors International Group.

Bioresorbable stents

The bioresorbable stent is a drug-eluting non-metallic, non-permanent stent that is absorbed by the body in due time and disappears after 12-24 months of implantation. These stents are becoming increasingly popular and are expected to grow at an explosive CAGR of nearly 25%,” says Srinivas.

The key market enablers for the bioresorbable stent include reduced risk of late stent thrombosis, restoration of the normal function of blood vessels, and fast healing. Though the cost of bioresorbable stents is high, its clinical efficacy drives both physicians and individuals to adopt these stents.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s research analysts in this report are:

  • Abbott Laboratories
  • Boston Scientific
