NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EvidenceCare, a Nashville-based decision support tool for physicians, announces the addition of a suite of clinical pathways designed for Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) reduction and treatment. The conditions covered within the initial collection include Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI), Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI), and Clostridium Difficile (C. Diff), three conditions which, together, represent 40% of the patients affected by Hospital-Associated Infections (HAI).
A 2014 HAI Prevalence Survey reported there was an estimated 722,000 HAIs in U.S. acute care hospitals. In U.S. hospitals alone, HAIs infect 1 in 20 patients and result in more than 100,000 deaths. Hospital Associated Infections (HAI) cost up to $45 billion in excess medical expenditures and result in immeasurable suffering.
The Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program was created under the Affordable Care Act to incentivize hospitals to curb HAIs and other hospital-acquired conditions. Under this program, the federal government cuts Medicare payments for hospitals with the highest rate of hospital-acquired conditions. In 2017, 769 hospitals will lose 1 percent of Medicare payments for ranking in the worst-performing quartile of hospitals that report hospital-acquired conditions. It is estimated that hospitals will lose approximately $430 million, 18 percent more than last year.
