Former head of U.S. Digital Service Mikey Dickerson joins government tech startup Nava PBC as advisor

Dickerson will help the company fuel its next stage of growth in building modern tech for citizen-focused government services

WASHINGTON--()--Nava PBC, a government tech startup borne from the HealthCare.gov recovery effort, has named former head of the U.S. Digital Service (USDS) Mikey Dickerson to its advisory board. Dickerson’s tenure with the USDS recently ended as the Obama administration completed its transition activities.

Dickerson’s appointment comes shortly after the close of HealthCare.gov’s fourth Open Enrollment period on January 31, three years after he helped rescue the website in late 2013. “Mikey brings an incredible depth of experience from his time co-founding and leading USDS. We’re excited to have his unique expertise as we partner with agencies to bring their services in line with evolving consumer expectations and modern technology practices,” said CEO Rohan Bhobe.

“I'm proud to be associated with Nava, which is bringing state of the art technical tools and methods into service for the American citizen,” Dickerson said. “I'm looking forward to helping them continue to succeed.”

In 2013, Dickerson worked to save HealthCare.gov from its initially disastrous rollout. The following year, he moved back to Washington in order to lead what would become the U.S. Digital Service, a group of ex-Silicon Valley technologists working to improve the government’s digital services. Since its inception, USDS has grown to hundreds of individuals, some of whom work directly within agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Education.

Nava PBC has meanwhile expanded its footprint beyond HealthCare.gov by engaging in projects with both the Department of Veterans Affairs and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The company is modernizing the tools and operational processes behind the backlog of Veterans’ appeals, as well as architecting the technical systems behind Medicare’s historic transition from a $500+ billion fee-for-service program to a quality-based model. The company hopes to augment its expertise with guidance from Dickerson on these and future initiatives.
