New Valentine’s Day Survey Surprisingly Reveals Men are More Likely than Women to Drop Hints about Wanting to Get Married

Study from James Allen, the Fastest-Growing Online Diamond Retailer, Finds Valentine’s Day is the Top Holiday for Engagements

NEW YORK--()--James Allen, the fastest-growing online diamond and bridal jewelry retailer, releases a study in advance of Valentine’s Day that reveals men are surprisingly more likely than women to drop hints about wanting to get married – such as subtly mentioning marriage in conversations or watching films about weddings.

The new study surveyed married adults about their Valentine’s Day plans and marriage proposals and found that Valentine’s Day is the most popular holiday to get engaged. For millennials in particular, 43% claimed Valentine's Day as their top day to propose or be proposed to. The survey also reveals that, although 85% of women believe they never pressured their partner to get married, 57% of men report feeling pushed into marriage.

“These survey results and our experience working with hundreds of thousands of happy couples over the past decade have shown us that the most important part of getting engaged, both in regards to the engagement ring and the proposal, is making it your own,” said James Allen Co-Founder and CEO, Oded Edelman. “Younger people in particular prefer unique romantic experiences over what’s traditional or expected. We also see this hold true in their preference to design their own engagement ring.”

The Valentine’s Day study finds that many couples are valuing quality time above all else this holiday. The most coveted Valentine’s Day gift of 2017 is a shared experience like a romantic dinner or theater tickets, followed by chocolate for men and jewelry for women. The top way to celebrate February 14th this year is going out to dinner (38%) followed by spending a romantic evening at home (33%).

The survey, which asked couples detailed questions about their personal experiences getting engaged, also found that:

  • Couples were more stressed about choosing the perfect ring than about the proposal itself
  • Men are about twice as likely to regret not getting a nicer engagement ring than women – with 93% of women claiming they like their ring and 33% of men saying they wished they had bought a nicer ring
  • 45% percent of respondents would have preferred to shop for a ring with their partner
  • One in four respondents were disappointed by their proposal, with the biggest complaint being that their significant other didn’t put in enough effort

The survey comes at the close of the so-called “proposal season” – between November and February – when 40% of all engagements occur.
