Care Innovations Launches Behavior Training Course for Clinicians to Drive Patient Behavior Change and Engagement for Improved Clinical Outcomes

Course supports the company’s commitment to empower patients to successfully manage health outside walls of the clinical setting

ROSEVILLE, Calif.--()--Care Innovations®, a pioneer in connecting the care continuum to the home, launched a behavior training course for clinicians to support improved patient engagement and overall health outcomes. The course aims to help clinicians shift their behaviors in order to deliver valuable coaching to patients that spurs behavior change. As value-based care puts added pressure on healthcare organizations to engage with patients, keeping them out of expensive care settings and taking a more active role in their own care is driven by patient engagement.

Patient engagement is one of the healthcare industry’s biggest pain points and helping patients make and sustain behavior change is a significant piece of a nurse’s role. The behavior training course outlines the challenges associated with trying to increase engagement, identifies areas for improvement, and highlights technology’s role in supporting these efforts.

“A significant amount of healthcare utilization in the U.S. is largely preventable or remediable through health behavior change,” said Maureen Glynn, Senior Director of Research and Compliance for Care Innovations. “We’re helping nurses learn how to make subtle shifts in their behaviors so patients will shift theirs. It can be simple, like the way you ask a question or summarizing what you heard to ensure accuracies, but we know all these things matter when it comes to behavior change.”

The course is broken into three key learning sections. First, attendees will walk through six steps to take to achieve behavior change in healthcare. Second, nurses will learn four clinician-coaching skills: crafting open-ended questions, sharing words of affirmation, demonstrating reflective listening and crafting summary statements. Third, nurses will discuss the most common challenges associated with acting as the coach, which are avoidance, ambivalence, resistance and compliance.

Care Innovations has deep roots in the intersection of behavior change and technology, and this course is an output of that research and work. As providers look to drive engagement, it is not enough to merely equip patients with technology. Technology must enable clinicians to meet patients in the right place and at the right time to empower self-management of their condition.

“At Care Innovations, we’re a transformation company,” said Julie Cherry, Chief Clinical Officer for Care Innovations. “And we know you can’t have transformation without behavior change. Our history with Intel and in developing technology based on behavior make this a natural fit for us to lead. We’re excited about the conversations happening during the training and look forward to sharing this important information with many more clinicians.”

The behavior training is an accredited course enabling nurses to earn continuing education credits. To inquire about opportunities to participate in upcoming training sessions, please contact Amanda Marshall, Continuing Education Administrator, at amanda.marshall@careinnovations.com.
