Technavio Announces Top Three Trends for Global Cordless Garden Equipment Market Through 2020

LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest global cordless garden equipment market report highlights three key emerging trends predicted to impact market growth through 2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as something that has potential for significant impact on the market and contributes to its growth or decline.

“Although a gas-powered lawn mower costs USD 50 less than a cordless lawn mower, there is a considerable difference in the cost of mowing per acre of lawn. A typical gas-powered push-type mower has a tank capacity of 2 or 3 gallons, and can be used to mow about half an acre of lawn. In the US, with gas prices close to USD 3.5 per gallon, a single mowing session is thus anticipated to cost close to USD 2.35 and mowing an acre will ideally cost around USD 4.7,” said Abhay Sinha, one of Technavio’s lead industry analysts for agricultural equipment research.

“With a typical push-type cordless lawn mower, a third of an acre can be mowed on a single charge. A cordless lawn mower requires 3.5 kW to recharge. With the electricity rate at USD 0.11 per kW-hour, it will therefore cost USD 0.38 per recharge and USD 1.04 for mowing an acre. A similar observation can be made about other geographies as well. Hence, it can be concluded that the popularity of cordless gardening equipment among end users is slated to rise during the forecast period,” added Abhay.

Technavio’s market research study identifies the following three emerging trends expected to propel the growth of the global cordless garden equipment market:

  • Increased adoption of smart grid technologies
  • Increase in renewable power generation sources
  • New application areas

Increased versatility

Manufacturers of power lawn mowers are designing versatile products. Product lines with compatible battery packs allow end-users to swiftly and easily switch between tasks without monitoring and maintaining fuel levels. For instance, GreenWorks Equipment offers a line of ten products consisting of a blower, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, tiller, trimmer, and five mowers that are all powered by the G-MAX 40-V lithium-ion battery. Similarly, Stanley Black & Decker offers several power lawn and garden products that use the same 20-V MAX battery.

Adoption of omni-channel retailing

In developed countries, the lawn and garden equipment market is dominated by few retail chains. For instance, in the US, Home Depot, Sears, Lowe's, and Walmart account for the majority of sales of garden equipment. These players, alongside other mass retailers, account for nearly three-fourth of the total market sales and approximately 80% of outdoor power equipment sales. Changing shopping patterns illustrate that customers compare price and features online before purchasing outdoor power equipment. Thus, marketers and retailers are expected to adopt omni-channel retail sales strategies to facilitate a seamless shopping experience for customers.

Hybrid electric lawn mower

Low battery capacity is one of the biggest problems of electric ride-on mowers. The battery-powered riders use deep discharge lead-acid batteries that have a run times of about an hour. With these mowers, there is always a compromise between practicality and cost-effectiveness.

Hybrid electric lawn mowers can overcome this challenge. The MPV-7100 by Raven that has an onboard charging system is one such hybrid mower. It has a 420-cc engine that powers its onboard 7,100-watt generator. The generator powers the blades and charges the batteries. It also powers the wheels in both gas and electric mode. The mower has a 46-inch mowing deck, cruise control, 17-mph transport speed, and a top mowing speed of 6 mph. The power outlet can supply power to up to five outlets for close to 8 hours, at half load on a full tank of gas. The market trend thus indicates a growing prominence of hybrid gardening equipment until 2020.
