Ebates Acquires Shopular

Acquisition Expands Ebates’ Mobile Shopping Offerings

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Ebates, the pioneer and leader in online cash back shopping and subsidiary of the global Internet services company Rakuten, today announced the acquisition of Shopular, a mobile product discovery app that is a consistent leader in user popularity and ratings.

Founded in 2012 by Navneet Loiwal and Tommy Tsai in Redwood City, California, Shopular delights shoppers with its intuitive product discovery experience and mobile shopping alerts. Shopular is used by over a million consumers who consistently reward it with the highest ratings. Shopular’s proprietary geo-targeting technology alerts users with relevant deals and coupons when users are near their favorite stores. Following the acquisition, Shopular will introduce cash back shopping to its users, complementing the Shopular user experience with Ebates’ popular loyalty offering. Loiwal and Tsai will remain with the company as general managers of the Shopular business, leading technology development and the cash back integration.

“Ebates is the leader in online cash back shopping and is widely used by consumers of all demographics,” said Navneet Loiwal, General Manager of Shopular. “We have always felt that joining the attractive Shopular product discovery experience with the trustworthiness of Ebates cash back shopping would be a winning combination. We are very excited about being able to leverage Ebates’ significant resources to deliver an even better experience to our users.”

The acquisition will strengthen Ebates’ position in the mobile shopping category by offering shoppers relevant deals and coupons directly on their mobile phones through Shopular’s powerful, proprietary geo-targeting capability.

“Shopular is the perfect partner to help us maximize our growth in the online and mobile commerce category,” said Kevin H. Johnson, CEO of Ebates. “With today’s consumers going mobile, it’s more important than ever to provide the right technologies to help them get the best deals, at the right time, as quickly as possible. We believe that the addition of Shopular to the Ebates family is the next step to making this happen.”

Over the past several years, Ebates has continued to increase its customer base, grow its network of participating stores, and expand its product offerings to include mobile apps for iOS and Android, as well as a browser extension for even easier cash back shopping. More than 2,000 leading retailers partner with Ebates to offer cash back and coupons to members across the world.
