Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California Joins Institute for Pediatric Innovation

Hospital Committed to Advancing Care Through Collaboration

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--()--In keeping with its commitment to advance pediatric care through technology and innovation, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California has joined the Institute for Pediatric Innovation (IPI), a national consortium dedicated to improving pediatric healthcare by bringing together key partners.

The Northern California Shriners Hospital is one of four well-respected children’s hospitals in the United States invited to participate in the consortium. Other members of the IPI Pediatric Hospital Consortium include:

  • Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, CA;
  • Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, OH; and
  • Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX

These three pediatric centers pioneered a clinical innovation catalyst program last year. The group focused on innovations related to the care of pressure ulcers, and began to scout for other innovative hospitals to join. The Northern California Shriners Hospital was invited to participate in a project to assess pressure mapping alternatives with the original three IPI member hospitals. As IPI and Shriners Hospital leadership learned more about each other, it became clear that the commitment to quality and innovation at the Northern California Shriners Hospital made it a great match with the other leading centers.

Shriners Hospital will host the first two-day workshop for consortium members on January 13 and 14 to kick off the 2016 clinical innovation catalyst program, a five-month professional development opportunity for frontline clinicians and allied health professionals. Shriners Hospital participants include Ingrid Parry, P.T., Olivia Arredondo, R.N., and Sarah Trowbridge, CPHQ. The Shriners Hospital team will work with clinicians from other participating hospitals to identify and develop infrastructure within each hospital that can support future clinical innovations to reduce the incidence of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI). All consortium participants will attend four two-day workshops that include guest speakers and discussion.

Three noted doctors recognized for their innovative approaches to care are presenting at the January workshop:

  • Tina Palmieri, M.D., Assistant Chief of Burns, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California;
  • Shinjiro Hirose, M.D., Director of Pediatric Surgery, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California;
  • Nam Tran, Ph.D., Associate Director, Point-of Care Testing Center for Teaching and Research, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of California, Davis.

“The work advanced through the Institute of Pediatric Innovation meshes seamlessly with our hospital mission of ensuring that children benefit from exceptional care, research and innovation,” says Margaret Bryan, administrator and CEO at the Northern California Shriners Hospital. “We are living and working in a new collaborative era of medicine, and the IPI provides a platform that promotes discovery, innovation and positive outcomes.

“I am inspired by the opportunity to initiate advancements in pediatric care that will benefit children near and far,” Bryan adds.

IPI's CEO Don Lombardi added, "We are pleased to welcome Shriners of Northern California to our Consortium. Shriners' management and clinical leadership has demonstrated adroitness and commitment to innovation, and the team is already making significant contributions to a Consortium that has been learning to work together for more than eight years. We are excited to hold our first ever professional education workshop for nurses here at Shriners."
