John Cornyn Named Texan of the Year by Texas Legislative Conference

Honor to be presented in New Braunfels March 18

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas--()--United States Senator John Cornyn has been named the 2016 Texan of the Year by the Texas Legislative Conference, the well-known annual statewide forum that is marking its 50th year next March.

Cornyn will be presented with the award Friday, March 18 at the conclusion of the conference during the noon luncheon at the New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center. He will be joining an array of prominent past honorees since 1974 including Barbara Jordan, Laura Bush, David Robinson and John Connally.

The Texas Legislative Conference is a nonpartisan organization of Texas business and political leaders who meet annually in New Braunfels to focus on public policy issues. This year’s topics on March 18 will include Sustaining the Texas Economic Miracle, Transportation Funding, and the EPA vs. Texas.

According to Conference Chair Carlton Schwab of the Texas Economic Development Council, “Senator Cornyn has served his native state with distinction as Attorney General, a district judge, a member of the Texas Supreme Court, and now for three terms as our United States Senator. His leadership in the Senate has and is benefitting all Texans, and we are honored to be recognizing him for this prestigious award at our Golden Anniversary Event.”

Cornyn was raised in San Antonio and graduated from Trinity University and St. Mary’s School of Law. In 2014, Texans re-elected Senator Cornyn for a third six-year term in the United States Senate. While in the Senate, Cornyn has received various awards and recognitions including the Border Texan of the Year Award, the Texas Association of Business Fighter for Free Enterprise Award, and the American Farm Bureau Federation Friend of the Farm Bureau Award, among others. He currently sits on the Senate Finance and Judiciary Committees and is the Co-Chairman of the Texas Caucus on Shale Oil and Gas, Aerospace Caucus, Air Force Caucus, Army Caucus, Community College Caucus, and more.

Senator Cornyn has distinguished himself as a leader in the Senate on a variety of issues important to Texans including national defense, repairing the immigration system and securing the borders, boosting access to more affordable healthcare, increasing educational opportunities for all Texans, keeping taxes low, and reducing spending. In 2014, Senate Republicans elected him to serve as majority whip for the 114th Congress.
