Ortho Rhode Island Becomes Largest Orthopedic Medicine Provider in the State

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--()--Three Rhode Island orthopedic practices have consolidated into a new larger orthopedic group. Blackstone Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Foundry Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and South County Orthopedics, are now Ortho Rhode Island, which is the largest privately-run orthopedic provider in the state.

The new super-group will cover 14 locations throughout Rhode Island in Providence, Washington and Kent Counties. With nearly 40 providers serving the orthopedic needs of patients in Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts, Ortho Rhode Island is poised to offer the most comprehensive and competitive orthopedic care in the marketplace. In addition to world-class, groundbreaking orthopedic services, Ortho Rhode Island will round out the complete continuum of care by offering physical and occupational therapy, advanced imaging (MRI, ultrasound, and digital x-ray), DME (durable medical equipment), athletic training/sports performance and a Fitness Center.

“We have very similar values and are focused on our patients. We expect that our geographic coverage will create a tremendous opportunity to better serve the entire state of Rhode Island in the current healthcare environment,” said Eric Walsh, MD, Ortho Rhode Island Vice President and Medical Director.

The group formed knowing that when practices join together, physicians make quicker decisions for improving patient care and managing costs. Ortho Rhode Island President and CEO, Michael Bradley, MD said, “Our scale allows us to leverage clinical and business synergies to improve patient access to affordable orthopedic care, and to benefit from greater bargaining power with suppliers.”

Ortho Rhode Island is not controlled by any hospital or institution; they remain a private orthopedic practice, affording them the agility to keep up with the rapidly changing healthcare environment. “Our size is our strength,” said Robert Marchand, MD. “We are working with like-minded partners to drive innovation, improve quality and manage our costs.”

Ortho Rhode Island’s goals include providing patients with innovations in care while focusing on developing a musculoskeletal practice capable of meeting increasingly rigorous government regulations and quality of care requirements. The practice has the ability to care for patients in seven hospitals, and the group’s areas of expertise will include joint preservation; robotic surgery and joint reconstruction; hand, shoulder, and upper extremity; spine; sports medicine; primary care sports medicine; general orthopedics; pain management; and podiatry. Ortho Rhode Island will use the power of scale, collaboration, and access to resources to create the most efficient and highest quality model to deliver orthopedic care.

“Our group can now offer coordinated orthopedic care from the beginning of any orthopedic injury or illness to get our patients back to doing what they want to do—utilizing our wonderful caring staff who have embraced this expansion and made it possible,” said Steven Blazar, MD.
