A Guy Walks into a Bar... Addiction Campuses Explains the Four Stages of Functional Alcoholism

The 4 Stages of a Functioning Alcoholic (Graphic: Business Wire)

BRENTWOOD, Tenn.--()--April is Alcoholism Awareness Month, and Addiction Campuses has a mirror. We’ve released a new FREE downloadable infographic to help educate people on what stage of functional alcoholism they are in.

“We hear the term a lot,” says CEO Brent Clements. “But in most cases the only one who thinks they’re ‘functioning’ is them. We know. Everybody knows. You can wait until you get a DUI or you can do something to keep it from getting too far.”

The 4 stages of alcoholism as explained in the infographic are:

  • Binge drinking/increased tolerance
  • Drinking as a coping mechanism
  • Isolation/legal problems/depression
  • Change in appearance/high blood pressure/liver issues

The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says a person should not exceed 3-4 drinks a day, while the Department of Health and Human Services says 2. We say there are a lot of things that play into alcoholism, and motive is the most important. Your body type, how much food you have eaten, and the potency of the alcohol all play factors, but the constant is for what purpose you are drinking. By dismantling the myths surrounding alcoholism, it is our hope that people will catch the warning signs before it’s too late.
