SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kabam, Inc. and RockYou today announced Kabam is transferring a majority of its Web-based games to RockYou, reflecting Kabam’s continued emphasis on developing games for smartphones and tablets and RockYou’s strategic expansion to extend the life cycle of long-running games from leading publishers. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The transfer closes in early 2015, after which RockYou will assume responsibility for technical operations, updates, customer support, marketing, and promotion of Kabam games Dragons of Atlantis, Edgeworld, The Godfather, Glory of Rome and Kingdoms of Camelot. Kabam will continue to operate Castle Age, Realm of the Mad God and other games developed by third-party partners on Kabam.com.
“This is a highly strategic move for Kabam as we are concentrating all of our development might and muscle on mobile games for our core North American and European markets, and expansion to Asia,” said Kabam Chief Operating Officer Kent Wakeford. “At the same time, we want to provide an established home for Kabam’s Web games to benefit the fans who have played them for years, and for new players who’ll soon discover them on RockYou.”
“RockYou has a long track record for maintaining the success of games and serving their loyal player base for many years after games launch,” Wakeford added.
“Kabam develops some of the Web’s best free-to-play games for core and mid-core players,” said RockYou CEO Lisa Marino. “We are so proud Kabam trusts us to continue serving these games and their fans well into the future. For RockYou as a company, we’re excited to further diversify our game network by adding many more core and mid-core titles, which attract an extremely appealing demographic for our video advertising partners.”
Kabam started as a developer of strategy games on Facebook in September 2009. Its first title, Kingdoms of Camelot, immediately became Facebook’s most popular strategy game. In 2011 Kabam expanded the Kingdoms of Camelot franchise to the mobile platform and it has since grossed more than $250 million in revenue. Kabam moved another of its popular Web titles, Dragons of Atlantis, to the mobile platform in 2014 and it has since gone on to become a $100 million franchise. By 2012, more than 70 percent of Kabam’s revenue has been generated on the mobile platform, leading the company in 2013 to dedicate its development resources exclusively to mobile games.
Kabam is the leader in the western world for free-to-play games for traditional players with first and third party published titles. Kabam games are available on mobile devices via its own dedicated channel in the Apple App Store, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, and on the Web via Facebook, Yahoo, Kabam.com and other platforms. Kabam is the 6th fastest growing company overall in North America, according to Deloitte LLP. Kabam's 2013 revenues exceeded $360 million, a 100 percent increase over 2012. The company is valued at more than $1 billion, profitable, cash-flow positive, and has created four titles that have grossed more than $100 million each in their life. Kabam's Kingdoms of Camelot franchise has grossed more than $250 million in less than four years, making it one of the top 10 strategy franchises of all time. In 2012, Kabam Publishing was launched to provide third-party developers access to Kabam's technology platform, distribution channels, data analytics and best practices that Kabam's in-house development teams use to bring wildly successful games to players worldwide. Kabam has 800 employees around the world, with corporate headquarters in San Francisco. The company's investors include Alibaba, Canaan Partners, Google, MGM, Intel, Pinnacle Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, Warner Brothers and others.
