Waterford Institute Donates 430 Books to Bunche Elementary in Support of Reading

Principal to Read All Day as Part of Book It National Young Readers Week

SALT LAKE CITY & CARSON, Calif.--()--In support of early-learning reading, Waterford Institute donated 430 books to the students of Bunche Elementary School, Carson, Calif., as part of their Book It National Young Readers Week Principal’s Challenge, a week long event celebrating reading. Bunche Elementary is part of the Compton Unified School District.

As part of the principal’s challenge, Principal La Ronda Ortega will read from the first class bell to the last class bell on Wednesday.

“I will do this in a top secret location that will announced just before the event,” Ortega said. “I could be reading on top of a monster truck all day or on the top of the school roof. The effort is done to inspire and maintain the love of reading among all students and is a step in our efforts to promote school wide literacy with a special emphasis on K-2 all year long.”

In support of the challenge, Waterford Institute is donating 430 books to the school – enough for each student to have his or her own book.

The Bunche Elementary library will host a Book-nic where students can check out books to read in designated areas and spread out blankets and eat snacks while they read. The event is for the entire student body.

“We are very pleased to participate in this event in support of reading,” said Dr. Benjamin Heuston, president of Waterford Institute. “Reading is at the core of all we do at Waterford Institute, and this event places an emphasis on it as one of the most important aspects of early learning and education.”

Bunche Elementary has for many years utilized the Waterford Early Learning (WEL) curriculum, which has successfully assisted in fostering literacy in Bunche’s K-1 programs. The Waterford program has allowed Bunche students to access foundational literacy skills and promotes incremental growth over time. The program is also used as a primary reading intervention program for students K-2 with the greatest need for extra support.
