cloudControl Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire dotCloud PaaS Business

PALO ALTO, Calif.--()--cloudControl, Inc., the US subsidiary of the Berlin, Germany headquartered PaaS pioneer cloudControl GmbH, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the dotCloud PaaS business from Docker, Inc. the company behind the eponymous open source container platform, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition positions cloudControl to expand its leading EU-centric public PaaS business to the important US market.

“My co-founders and I always shared the vision to build a truly global technology company, something that despite Germany’s economic power seems very rare,” said Philipp Strube, founder and CEO of cloudControl. “It’s a unique opportunity to kickstart our US market expansion with an established brand and customer base and will allow us to continue our exceptional company growth.”

The award winning dotCloud PaaS launched in 2011 as one of the first multi-language platforms and has since grown into one of the leading US-based PaaS providers. In 2013, the company behind dotCloud launched the Docker project, which has enjoyed explosive growth and is rapidly emerging as the standard for containerization. After renaming the company Docker, Inc. and publicly shifting focus towards the Docker business, Docker began to look for a good home for the legacy dotCloud PaaS business.

“While we need to focus our resources to truly seize the opportunity behind the Docker project, it was very important to us to provide a smooth transition for the dotCloud PaaS customers,” said Ben Golub, CEO, Docker, Inc. “cloudControl has years of experience running a world class PaaS, and distinguished themselves by the depth of their dedication to investing in the dotCloud platform and customer base. With cloudControl taking over, customers can continue to rely on the dotCloud PaaS for their mission critical applications.”

For dotCloud PaaS customers the acquisition should be welcome news, and alleviate any concerns about the long term future of the service. Initially, cloudControl will continue to run the dotCloud PaaS technology as-is while working on providing a seamless migration path and timeline. The migration to the cloudContol PaaS technology will ultimately result in a future-proof foundation for customers to build, deploy and scale their applications.

“cloudControl is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading PaaS services and being a true partner to our customers was always one of our core values as a company,” said Strube. “Going forward we’re committed to first and foremost providing a seamless migration path and outstanding support to existing customers while also laying a great foundation for the future growth of the dotCloud brand.”

The strong and fast-growing customer base in the EU and in the US and the unique white label partnership model further assure cloudControl’s position as one of the leading PaaS companies in the world.
