BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--FIRST Conference – Founded by Internet pioneer, Dr. Paul Vixie, Farsight Security, Inc., today emerged from stealth mode at the FIRST Conference in Boston, Massachusetts to debut Newly Observed Domains (NOD), a new set of data solutions that provide real-time actionable insights on young domain names.
Dr. Paul Mockapetris, the Internet pioneer who invented the Internet’s Domain Name System (DNS), currently serves on the company’s Board of Directors. Founded in 2013, the company is privately held.
Farsight closes the Threat Intelligence context gap with its real-time Passive DNS solutions that provide valuable contextual information to prepackaged reputation and threat feeds e.g. IOCs, whitelists, and blacklists. With Farsight data, security teams can reduce false positives, amplify threat feeds and accelerate the detection of new threats by identifying known associates, enhance mitigation strategies with plug-and-play solutions, and improve the prediction of impending cyberthreats.
With the launch of Farsight, Dr. Vixie returns to the commercial world after 19 years as the Founder, Chairman and President of the non-profit, Internet Systems Consortium. Dr. Vixie recently was inducted into the 2014 Internet Hall of Fame for his work related to DNS. He is the primary author and technical architect of BIND, an open source software that implements DNS protocols for the Internet. Dr. Vixie is also well-known for his contributions to the teams that solved Conficker, DNSChanger and other Internet infections. He is the inventor of the real-time reputation concept (RBL), architect of the DNS firewall (RPZ), and founder of PAIX and MAPS. He is delivering two presentations at FIRST Conference this week, including “Use of Passive DNS Database in Incident Response and Forensics.”
“I spent most of the 1980s and 1990s making the Internet bigger and easier to use, but unfortunately, the criminals came along for the ride. With Farsight, I've assembled an expert team and some simple but highly effective ideas for making the Internet safer, which means, harder to use if you're a criminal. I'm working toward a world where an online criminal infrastructure can be torn down as fast as it's constructed, if not faster,” said Dr. Vixie.
“Farsight's unique approach to security data processing combines multiple real-time streams of Internet observations and delivers actionable observations to the customer with near zero latency. By itself, or when combined with Farsight’s historical database, it allows massive scale, and new approaches to emerging or old problems. Farsight proved this using a blue-chip list of customers in stealth mode. This first-rate team, technologies, and experience base make Farsight a company to watch,” said Dr. Mockapetris.
While in stealth mode, Farsight acquired the Passive DNS-related assets from the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), expanded its customer and partner portfolio, and grew its technical, sales and marketing teams. Farsight offers the industry’s largest, most robust historical Passive DNS database and real-time Passive DNS solutions, which each provide deep Internet configuration visibility for unparalleled situational awareness, and real-world data that adds valuable, actionable context to existing Threat Intelligence. With today’s launch, Farsight will be able to rapidly develop new solutions to advance Threat Intelligence and expand its partnerships, customers and other business initiatives.
“Farsight Security’s passive DNSDB is the most complete dataset of its’ kind. With DNSDB, it becomes easy to create relationship graphs between groups of IP addresses and domain names, as well as discover unusual trends in domain resolution and registration over time. DNSDB is also particularly useful as an investigative tool for DFIR teams. It has helped us to significantly reduce our false positives,” said Alex Pinto, Chief Data Scientist for MLSec Project, an information security monitoring tool that uses machine learning techniques to transform massive amount of logs into incident detection and actionable results.
About Farsight Security, Inc.
Today’s Threat Intelligence often lacks the context needed to be actionable. Founded in 2013 by Internet pioneer and DNS thought leader, Dr. Paul Vixie, Farsight Security, Inc. provides network security solutions that deliver that critical contextual information (the information documenting the network configuration of the threat and of the Internet surrounding the threat) to significantly increase the value of Threat Intelligence. Farsight real-time Passive DNS solutions include DNSDB, SIE and NOD. The company is headquartered in San Mateo, California.
