Database Innovator Peter Boncz to Present on Expanded Actian Analytics Platform SQL-in-Hadoop Capabilities at Hadoop Summit

Renowned data management architect discusses design goals, features of top-performing database now in Hadoop

Hadoop Summit 2014

SAN JOSE, Calif.--()--Peter Boncz, senior research scientist at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), professor at VU University Amsterdam and technical advisor to Actian Corporation (“Actian”), the first company to assemble an end-to-end big data analytics platform that runs natively on Hadoop, will present “Highest-Performing SQL-in-Hadoop: Announcing ‘Project Vortex’” at the 2014 Hadoop Summit being held June 3-5, 2014 in San Jose, Calif.

Boncz’s session will detail how the new offering on the Actian Analytics Platform makes the most efficient X100 analytical query engine accessible in Hadoop. Boncz, architect of the transformational MonetDB and X100 Vectorwise databases, explains design goals and features of this offering, which uses HDFS native storage and Hadoop clusters for storing, updating and querying huge databases. Introduced in 2010, the columnar, vectorized analytical database inspired others to create vector analytical databases, but the X100 data management system continues to dominate performance charts. The update brings industrial-grade SQL (optimizer, APIs, access control, etc.) to vector technology: HDFS performance instrumentation, elastic scale-out, maintenance-free failover and resource optimization via YARN.

Actian, a platinum sponsor of the Hadoop Summit, will demonstrate the Actian Analytics Platform, including its expanded Hadoop capabilities, in its Booth #P6. The new edition, to be made generally available June 30, 2014, represents a major milestone in extending and enriching the Actian Analytics Platform announced earlier this year. The platform has already seen extensive use accelerating time to decision across a variety of markets, with customers including major-name innovators such as Evernote and Opera Solutions.
