DENVER--()--Novinda Corporation, a leader in non-carbon mercury removal technologies, announced the results of a life-cycle assessment (LCA) of greenhouse gases on its flagship product - Amended Silicates® HgX (AS-HgX) – a non-carbon product for removing mercury from the flue gas of coal-fired power plants. The LCA study, which compared Amended Silicates’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to mercury removal products that use powdered activated carbon (PAC), demonstrated that the AS-HgX life-cycle GHG emissions were one-tenth of those associated with PAC products.

This GHG performance delivers a potential reduction in CO2 emissions of 175,000 metric tons per year if just 10 percent of the market substitutes Novinda’s AS-HgX for PAC. (Mercury removal sorbent market estimated at 500 million lbs. per year - KeyBanc Capital Markets equity research).

Designed specifically to address and exceed the mercury removal rates of the EPA’s stringent Mercury and Air Toxic Standards (MATS), Novinda’s Amended Silicates products have delivered sustained performance in full-scale tests at more than 35 power plants. AS-HgX has proven to be extremely effective, as well as cost competitive, removing mercury with two to three times the efficiency of the market’s standard mercury removal products.

In addition to its low GHG emissions during production, AS-HgX preserves the fly ash of coal-fired power plants for recycling to concrete manufacturers as a replacement for portland cement. This not only provides utilities with an economical and environmentally friendly option for fly ash disposal but results in a further reduction in GHG emissions in portland cement production, preventing an additional estimated one million metric tons per year of CO2 emissions.

“In today’s environmentally conscious business climate, LCAs and sustainability strategies are important factors in designing products. We are pleased with the outstanding results of this study and proud that the Amended Silicates platform has proven to be an exceptionally efficient, as well as environmentally friendly product with such a small carbon footprint,” said Ed Williams, Novinda’s CEO.

Research Methods

The Amended Silicates LCA study was performed by CH2M HILL using the World Resources Institute Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard and International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 14040 and ISO 14044. Life-cycle GHG emissions for Amended Silicates were estimated using process specific data and compared with existing literature values representative of PAC products. The complete LCA is available on the Novinda website: http://www.novinda.com/files/Final_Amended_Silicates_Life_Cycle_Assessment.pdf.
