PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SCAN Health Plan Arizona is helping seniors get the year off to a healthy start with free exercise classes, educational presentations and cooking demonstrations.
“SCAN’s free programs are not only educational, they offer seniors a chance to socialize with other local seniors and form new friendships,” said Susan Cypert, senior community resource specialist for SCAN Health Plan Arizona. “Through programs like these we aim to keep seniors healthier and independent.”
Tempe
The Maricopa County classes will
be held at the SCAN Health Education Center at 1400 East Southern
Avenue, Suite 735, in Tempe. Anyone interested in attending may call
855-901-7226, ext. 3420, to register. All events are free and open to
SCAN members as well as the general public; however, space is limited,
so pre-registration is required.
On Feb. 2 SCAN will launch “Wellness Way of Living,” an eight-week series of classes designed to support participants’ health and wellness. It integrates physical, environmental, occupational, intellectual, spiritual, social, financial and emotional aspects of health. Classes are held every Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. through March 25. The program is presented in conjunction with the Greater Valley Health Education Center, and participants are asked to attend all eight presentations. In February weekly topics will include:
- Feb. 4 – What is wellness?
- Feb. 11 – Making SMART goals
- Feb. 18 – Physical activity and nutrition
- Feb. 25 – Balancing daily living
SCAN’s exercise classes allow participants to increase their skill and endurance in a supportive and social environment. Classes include:
- Tai Chi & Qigong – A form of moving energy derived from Chinese martial arts. It consists of a series of slow, fluid movements done softly and gently using breathing techniques for healthy biorhythms. Held every Wednesday from 9-10 a.m.
- Yoga for Every Body – A gentle yoga class specifically designed for seniors with movement disorders. Participants will develop an overall sense of well-being, improved mobility and confidence. Held every Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
- Zumba Plus – A Latin-inspired dance and fitness class for those 50 plus. Held every Thursday from 10:45-11:45 a.m.
SCAN’s health education presentations in February include:
- Feb. 4 from 9-10 a.m. – Active Every Day – A look at physical activity guidelines for older adults and risks associated with inactivity.
- Feb. 18 from 9-10 a.m. – Tests You Want to Take & Doc Talk – A general guide for prevention screenings and vaccines for people age 65 and older. Plus questions and answers with a local physician.
A cooking demonstration on Feb. 19 from 10:30 a.m. - noon will focus on warm winter dishes. This presentation will offer some new healthy and easy versions of traditional wintertime favorites.
Tucson
In Pima County SCAN is hosting
Laughter Yoga on Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. - noon. It will be held at the
Medicare Health Benefits Resource Center, 2716 South 6th
Avenue, in Tucson. Participation is free, but space is limited. Seniors
must register by calling 855-901-7226, ext. 3420.
