JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--()--The Main Street America Group helped teachers and students at Woodland Acres Elementary School start the new school year in the best possible way by delivering a truckload of much-needed school supplies to the Duval County, Fla., public school.

All supplies were donated by Main Street America employees based at its corporate headquarters located just a few minutes from the school’s campus. After the supplies arrived, Woodland Acres teachers were able to select what they needed to set up their classrooms for the 2013-14 school year. The supplies included copy paper, notebook paper, pencils, erasers, pens, crayons, markers, notebooks, pocket folders and binders.

“Having supplies when the students come in for those who may not be able to provide their own is an amazing relief,” said Woodland Acres second grade teacher Angela Parris. The school is located in Jacksonville’s economically challenged Arlington neighborhood.

“The supplies Main Street America provided will be put to great use by our teachers and students,” said fourth grade teacher Cauli Chiscon. “It’s great to know we have such supportive individuals that work for such an amazing company that partners with us.”

In addition to the supply drive, the super-regional property/casualty insurance carrier’s relationship with Woodland Acres includes onsite tutoring by its employees throughout the school year, as well as a summer reading book drive and an interactive field trip for the school’s entire fifth grade class at its corporate headquarters. Additionally, Main Street America is funding a new community outreach initiative to get parents of Woodland Acres students more involved in their children’s education.

This strong business-school relationship is one of the great success stories of the University of North Florida’s College of Education and Human Services’ award-winning Urban Schools Program. The relationship between Main Street America and Woodland Acres began at the start of the 2009-10 school year.

“All of our Woodland Acres teachers were helped by this wonderful donation of supplies from Main Street America’s employees,” said Christie Stevenson, the University of North Florida’s residential clinical faculty at Woodland Acres. “This year, we have nine new teachers here and it really was a financial life saver for many of them.”
