Palo Alto Unified School District Restores Data 600% Faster With Actifio

California School District Shrinks Data Restoration Times from Hours to Minutes while Streamlining Application Development and Testing

WALTHAM, Mass.--()--Actifio™, the radically simple copy data storage company, today announced that its Copy Data Storage platform has been selected and deployed by the Palo Alto Unified School District in Palo Alto, CA. One of the nation’s most prestigious and progressive public school districts, the Palo Alto Unified School District comprises twelve elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools.

Supporting over 12,000 students and 1,500 teachers and staff members, the Palo Alto Unified School District relied on an IT environment comprising approximately 170 virtualized servers running VMware as well as legacy hardware. Supporting multiple services every day, the IT team found backup and restoration challenging – particularly in a complex production storage environment. They sought a data management solution that could reduce data restoration times from a half-day to ten minutes without relying on the production data environment for support, according to Palo Alto Unified School District Application Specialist Terry Young.

“Actifio’s copy data storage platform gave us the most reliable data protection in the world as well as the fastest restoration times we’ve ever experienced,” said Young. “With legacy storage products from other vendors, the restoration process was always arduous and time-consuming because they were too dependent on the production environment. Since we switched to Actifio, we also realized tremendous cost savings as well as a faster and more efficient Test and Development environment.”

Tasked with managing large multi-terabyte files for the entire school district, Young sought a faster and more agile backup and restoration solution for the data center. After evaluating solutions from DELL, CommVault, EMC and Hewlett-Packard, Young found that these products could handle basic backup operations but were unable to easily manage the application recovery and data restoration process in a fast, efficient manner.

“With Actifio’s copy data storage platform, I never have to worry about restoration as there is no reliance on production storage for recovery. I find the solution complements my Flash storage array as I can perform backups faster as well as manage more frequencies during the day for more granular recovery points,” said Young.

“We’re proud to deliver results like this to such a fantastic and forward-thinking school system,” said Actifio CEO Ash Ashutosh. “All of our customers have better ways to spend the money and time we can free up from redundant systems managing excess copies, but seeing our technology benefit the children of Palo Alto brought a smile to my face and to many Actifians.”
