Ted Ward, GEICO vice president of marketing and a good chum of the Gecko, recounts how it all happened. “About 18 months ago Workman Publishing contacted The Martin Agency, our long-time advertising firm, about a book idea. They wondered if the Gecko was ready to put his colorful Gecko-like thoughts down on paper. If so, Workman was ready to roll the presses.
“We didn’t hesitate. Throughout all the years that the Gecko was working with us and seeing a lot of the country, he’d also been storing up a lot of observations. Since we couldn’t put everything into those 30-second commercials about auto insurance, we wanted to give the Gecko his chance. And he got right down to work.”
