Winn-Dixie Expands Voluntary Recall On Cut Fruit Produced By Renaissance Food Group – Mango Spears, Fruit Burst, and Island Medley – Due to Possible Heath Risk

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--()--Winn-Dixie today announced it is expanding an immediate voluntary recall of select cut fruit produced by Renaissance Food Group. The products are being recalled as a precaution because they contain a mango ingredient associated with Agricola Daniella Mangoes that has the potential of being contaminated with Salmonella. The expansion of this recall, which was first initiated on Aug. 31 for select Winn-Dixie stores in Florida, now includes the addition of Mango Spears to the product list and the inclusion of all Louisiana and Mississippi stores. Winn-Dixie stores in the states of Alabama and Georgia, along with many Florida stores, are not affected by this recall.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Specific products recalled include Mango Spears, Fruit Burst and Island Medley varieties of cut fruit sold under the Winn-Dixie name. The recalled products were produced at two Renaissance Food Group production facilities and packaged in plastic bowls. They were distributed from Aug. 30 – Sept. 18, 2012. The paper label affixed to the plastic container will have plant numbers of either P-009 or P-008 and will be located to the left of the Universal Product Code (UPC). Winn-Dixie has received no reports of any issues associated with consumption of the cut fruit products.

Out of an abundance of caution for its customers, Winn-Dixie is immediately recalling this cut fruit produced by Renaissance Food Group from all stores in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi and in the following Florida counties: Brevard, Broward, Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Flagler, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Marion, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, St. Lucie, Sarasota, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia.
