Acker Merrall Blows into Windy City – and Pours It On! Firm’s First Chicago Wine Auction Achieves $3.55 Million, 92% Sold

CHICAGO--()--Acker Merrall & Condit, the world’s leading wine auctioneer and America’s oldest fine wine merchant, announced today the results of its first-ever Chicago wine auction, held on Saturday, October 22nd, at the Trump International Hotel. 92% of all lots traded with a total gross of $3.55 million.

"I love Chicago, and I’ve wanted to bring our auctions here for a long time,” noted John Kapon, CEO of Acker Merrall. “The response we received today is strong validation of the fact that Chicago is one of the great wine centers in the world, and that wine lovers everywhere recognize Acker Merrall for what it is – a company that not only auctions the finest and rarest wine, but a company that celebrates and shares the joys of wine.”

Auction highlights included:

  • 3 magnums 2002 Romanee Conti (lot 298 – sold for $67,100)
  • 6 magnums 1990 La Tache (lot 304 – sold for $67,100)
  • An Assortment of DRC 2000 (lot 236 – sold for $26,840)
  • A full case of 1962 La Romanee by Leroy (lot 430 – sold for $26,840)
  • A full case of 1982 Chateau Latour (lot 204 – sold for $24,400)

Noted Mr. Kapon, “Even though we’re the largest rare wine auctioneer in the world, we’re not resting on our laurels. We have an auction next Saturday, the 29th, in New York and the following Friday and Saturday, November 4th and 5th, in Hong Kong, each of which will feature large, magnificent parcels from Don Stott, the world’s premier Burgundy collector. But this weekend was all about Chicago; there’s just something special about this town. We were made to feel so welcome here, and with our local team in place, led by Edward Brooks, Chicago will surely remain our kind of town.”

Auction attendees certainly hope so. They applauded the array of wines offered for sale and sampling by Acker Merrall, as well as its magnificent catalog (featuring many Chicago landmarks, the catalog is, in and of itself, a work of art).

Paul Bortin, Chicago native and buyer at the auction noted, “I have to thank Acker for making Chicago a great wine town again. This was the best week of my wine life so far. I’ve never seen anything like it. The wines Acker Merrall served made it feel like a grand wine and dinner party thrown by your most generous and extravagant friend. These guys really know how to do it.”

They’ll be doing it again in Chicago on January 28th of the New Year.
