Icera Selects Spirent for Testing of Advanced Receivers in UMTS/HSPA+ Devices

Spirent Solution Enables Automated Testing of Advanced Receiver Designs for Next-Generation UMTS/ HSPA+ Devices

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & BRISTOL, United Kingdom--()--Spirent Communications announced today that it has supplied the industry’s first automated solution for testing Type 3i advanced receivers in UMTS/HSPA+ mobile devices to Icera, a leading developer of soft modem chipsets for smartphones and mobile broadband devices. The Spirent solution, built on the Spirent 8100 Development Library, combines advanced automated test software with Spirent’s channel emulator and multi-cell UMTS/HSPA+ network emulator to enable comprehensive real-world device performance testing.

Receiver design can greatly impact cellular modem device performance and network resource allocation. Type 3i advanced receiver designs enable network operators and device vendors to significantly reduce the impact of interference from other users or cell sites, resulting in data throughput gains, especially for users who are located at or near the edge of a cell. This design helps operators to reduce costs and to maximize the quality of experience for subscribers. Icera launched its IceClear™ technology in January 2010, enabling device manufacturers and network operators to take advantage of Type 3i receiver technology.

“The Spirent system’s ability to automate testing of our advanced receiver performance in the lab under real-world network conditions greatly reduces our test time as well as increases our test coverage for these interference-limited scenarios,” said Steve Allpress, CTO of Icera. “We can now set up our testing in minutes, including 3GPP standard test cases as well as our own challenging test environments that include complex fading models and the interference effects from other cell-sites.”

“The widening availability of HSPA+ data networks and devices has increased the demand for effective tools to verify performance of the latest receiver designs,” said Nigel Wright, vice president of product marketing for Spirent’s wireless division. “Our automated test capability enables Icera to carry out more testing in less time, helping to ensure that device user experience meets the expectations of today’s demanding consumers. As a leader in mobile device performance testing, Spirent is uniquely positioned to offer the industry’s first automated solution for testing Type 3i receiver performance.”
