Gov. Brown Joins IEP in Supporting Green Jobs

Signing of SBX1-2 a victory for clean energy

MILPITAS, Calif.--()--Joining Governor Jerry Brown as he signed SBX1-2 into law today at the Sun Power Solar Panel Manufacturing Plant, Independent Energy Producer Executive Director Jan Smutny-Jones called the landmark measure “a major victory for green jobs, clean energy and the state’s economy.”

SBX1-2 by Senator Joe Simitian (D–Palo Alto) requires that 33 percent of the state’s energy come from renewable sources by 2020. Previously, the goal was 20 percent by 2010.

“The jobs and investment in SBX1-2 will boost our economy and set a national standard for renewable energy as California takes the lead in providing clean energy for future generations,” said Smutny-Jones. “We applaud Governor Brown’s commitment to balancing a healthy environment and economy.”

Over 45 energy, labor, environmental and health organizations joined IEP in supporting SBX1-2, including the California Wind Energy Association, AFSCME, Sierra Club California and the American Lung Association of California.

IEP is California’s largest association of electricity generators, representing over 26,000 MWs of power, or about one-half of California’s peak needs — about eighty percent of the renewable energy being delivered in California.
