Los Angeles Area College Saves Money, Recruits “Green Workforce” with Xerox Managed Print Services

ROCHESTER, N.Y.--()--While searching for new opportunities to save money, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC) signed on for Xerox Corporation’s (NYSE: XRX) managed print services (MPS) to cut operational costs by $1.5 million and boost student recruitment with more efficient and environmentally-sensitive technology.

Under the five year MPS contract, LATTC will consolidate output devices, such as printers, copiers and fax machines to reduce its carbon footprint. Xerox’s print governance features – automated “pop up” guidelines on the computer screen – will help students and staff direct print jobs to the most cost-effective, energy-efficient machine.

The new print strategy, which reduces paper use, power consumption and landfill waste, supports the college’s Green Workforce Education initiative, which appeals to the growing number of prospective students seeking training for the “green workforce,” jobs tied to renewable energy and energy efficiency.

“By updating and improving the reliability of our campus print facilities, we’re helping students work more efficiently day to day,” said Dr. Mary Gallagher, vice president, Administrative Services, LATTC. “The new print infrastructure makes it easier for all of us to champion the college’s environmental sustainability and cost-savings goals, freeing up time and resources that we can reallocate to what matters most: providing a great education for our students.”

To keep students involved in reducing waste and costs, LATTC introduced an incentive program to make the population more conscious of print volume and efficiency. Xerox also created a Web portal so students and staff can send larger print jobs to the campus print center for better management of jobs and faster turnaround time.

“Xerox is helping higher education institutions uncover cost savings they didn’t know they had,” said Stephen Cronin, president, Xerox Global Document Outsourcing. “LATTC is tapping into benefits beyond reducing costs. As it increasingly competes for students seeking ‘green’ training and certification programs, MPS can be an important strategy to ensure its own facilities meet environmental sustainability goals.”
