World telecom statistics and forecast report - Some Key Findings

Americas: Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay enjoy Latin America's highest broadband penetration rate, with 10.8%, 13.0% and 11.2% of their population subscribing to the service respectively. Chile follows with 10.5%.

Asia: Indonesia and Bangladesh are some of the few countries in Asia enjoying fixed subscriber growth. Indonesia has seen its number of subscribers increase by 14.7% in 2010 and Bangladesh follows with 12.0% growth. Most other countries in the region have however suffered from fixed subscriber erosion.

Eastern Europe: For the first time, the region suffered from negative telecom service revenue growth in 2009 with a revenue decrease of 12.5%. This was mainly a result of the economic downturn. Revenue growth is however expected to stabilize over the next 5 years with a forecasted CAGR of 4.0% between 2010 and the end of 2014.

Middle East: Turkey and Iran continue to be by far the region's largest mobile markets, with 61.9 million and 68.5 million mobile subscribers respectively. Iran has therefore now surpassed Turkey as the region's largest mobile market. Saudi Arabia follows in 3rd place with 48.1 million mobile subscribers.

North Africa: The region is continuing to enjoy a significant broadband growth of 50.1% in 2009 and a forecasted growth of 36.8% in 2010. The growth trend is expected to continue in the double digits over the next 4 years and by the end of 2014 broadband subscribers should represent 91.0% of all Internet connection in North Africa.

Western Europe: Most countries are continued to suffer from a decrease in fixed subscribers in 2010, however countries such as Austria and Spain have seen their number of fixed subscribers stabilize. The decreasing trend is nevertheless expected to continue over the next 4 years, with the number of fixed subscribers forecasted to decline by a CAGR of -1.0% in the region as a whole between 2010 and the end of 2014.
