Spellbook Names Meltem Kuran-Berkowitz as Chief Marketing Officer Amid Multi-Product Expansion

Kuran-Berkowitz joins as Spellbook scales its growing multi-product suite for in-house legal teams in the agentic era

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Spellbook, the leading AI infrastructure for contracts used by over 5,000 in-house teams and law firms, today announced that Meltem Kuran-Berkowitz has joined the company as Chief Marketing Officer, following several months leading the function in an interim capacity. She leads all growth and marketing as Spellbook expands its product offering for in-house legal teams across the globe.

Spellbook serves customers in over 80 countries, including LG, Dropbox, Panasonic, eBay and Atkins Réalis. Its growing product suite includes:

  • Spellbook Autonomous Contract Management (ACM), an AI-native alternative to legacy contract lifecycle management that runs contracts from intake through renewal.
  • Spellbook Review, the #1 contract AI tool for drafting, reviewing and complex multi-step legal work

"We've scaled our original product: AI contract review, massively. Now we're transforming into an end-to-end suite for agreements in the enterprise, and Meltem is the perfect operator to bring us to the next level of scale," said Scott Stevenson, CEO of Spellbook. "Her experience at Deel enables her to communicate very effectively about the power of eliminating red tape and drudgery to help businesses move faster.”

Kuran-Berkowitz joins from Deel, the global payroll and workforce platform, where she spent five and a half years as Head of Growth. She joined in 2020, when the company was generating under $1 million in revenue, and stayed through its climb past $1 billion in annual recurring revenue, taking part in one of the fastest ascents in software history. During that period she built and led growth teams across multiple regions and Deel's expanding product lines.

"I like hard problems and products that solve for a very tangible outcome," said Kuran-Berkowitz. "Contracts are everywhere. They're the reason we have trust in our modern economy, and they're also where the economy slows down."

That pragmatism already shows up in how Spellbook spends money. Instead of signing celebrity and professional-athlete endorsement deals like others in the market, the company put $1 million behind a Fellowship Fund for students working on legal-tech problems. The inaugural fellow is focused on M&A workflows, timed to what’s shaping up as a record year for M&A deal volume.

That same pragmatism carries into how Kuran-Berkowitz plans to run marketing. "Scott's zero-tolerance policy on AI slop doesn't stop at the product," said Kuran-Berkowitz. "While I am excited about AI and all it can do for the teams’ efficiency, I have no interest in pumping out AI campaigns which would disrespect the attention of our prospects and customers.”

The appointment follows a period of rapid expansion for Spellbook, including the May hire of former Shopify and Atlassian CTO Jean-Michel Lemieux to a new role built for AI-native companies, Executive Individual Contributor (EIC). The company has grown from roughly 2,700 to 5,000 in-house teams and law firms over the past year, more than Harvey and Legora combined, and has reviewed over 10 million contracts to date. In October 2025, the company raised a $50 million USD Series B led by Khosla Ventures at a $350 million post-money valuation, added a $40 million USD debt facility from RBCx to fund acquisitions in a consolidating market, and was named Canada's fastest-growing company at the inaugural Built in Canada Awards. Spellbook is on track to reach $100 million in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026, as it works to modernize the $1 trillion transactional legal market so contracts can keep pace with the global economy.
