BioTalent Canada Unveils I.D.E.A.L Scholarship to Champion Diversity in STEM

OTTAWA, Ontario--()--BioTalent Canada is proud to announce the launch of its I.D.E.A.L ScholarshipTM — a groundbreaking initiative designed to promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility leadership (IDEAL) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) studies. The scholarship will encourage equity-deserving groups to enter STEM studies, diversify the bio-economy, and increase enrollment in STEM programs across Canada.

The I.D.E.A.L Scholarship — an extension of BioTalent Canada’s successful I.D.E.A.L Employer Recognition Program — embodies the organization’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse workforce, and recognizing the need for equitable representation in Canada’s bio-economy. The program is tailored to support students entering their first year of study in accredited colleges or universities in Canada, focusing on those pursuing STEM disciplines.

"BioTalent Canada is excited to introduce the I.D.E.A.L Scholarship which expands our commitment to diversity in the bio-economy," said Rob Henderson, President and CEO of BioTalent Canada. "By supporting equity-deserving groups in STEM, we're investing in individuals who will be the sector's future. Diversity fuels innovation, and this initiative will fuel that creativity with the talent it needs to succeed.”

The I.D.E.A.L Scholarship is open to students who self-identify as members of equity-deserving groups, including women, LGBTQ2+ individuals, persons with disabilities, indigenous groups, or newcomers. The focus for the inaugural year will be on candidates from indigenous groups or persons with disabilities, based on the findings of BioTalent Canada’s Labour Market Information (LMI) which highlighted these two groups as the least represented in the industry.

"By actively promoting diversity and inclusion, BioTalent Canada is endeavouring to foster a vibrant and innovative bio-economy," Henderson added. "Our industry thrives on fresh perspectives and varied experiences. The I.D.E.A.L Scholarship is not just about providing financial support; it's about cultivating a community of diverse talents that will drive the future of biotechnology in Canada."

The I.D.E.A.L Scholarship seeks to address disparities by encouraging and empowering individuals from equity-deserving groups to pursue STEM studies and contribute to the growth of the bio-economy. Successful applicants will be chosen based on a set of criteria that include career objectives, leadership in IDEA principles, learning and awareness of IDEA principles, inclusivity through education and more.

Applications for the I.D.E.A.L Scholarship will be opening Spring 2024. Visit biotalent.ca/awards to learn about BioTalent Canada awards and recognitions.

The addition of the I.D.E.A.L Scholarship to BioTalent Canada’s suite of products, programs and services complements the work already being done through the Student Work Placement Program to ensure equity-deserving groups can gain meaningful employment in Canada’s health and biosciences sector.
