Kaleidoscope Raises $6M Seed Financing Co-Led by Hummingbird Ventures and Dimension

NEW YORK--()--Kaleidoscope, pioneering an operating system to accelerate research team performance, today announced the completion of a $6M seed financing round, co-led by Hummingbird Ventures and Dimension, with participation from Caffeinated Capital, SV Angel, Hawktail, and individual investors. The funding will be used to invest in product development and team expansion, with a focus on software engineers.

Scientific organizations are increasingly employing cross-disciplinary teams, from clinicians to engineers to bench scientists. However, there is a startling lack of structure and clarity to this collaboration today, making it extremely difficult to properly track scientific decision-making. Further, not only has the volume of data generated increased exponentially over the years, but data is changing hands more often. Many organizations are outsourcing various components of their projects, meaning that data is frequently shared between individuals, across teams, and with external partners, with no unified way to understand who did what.

Kaleidoscope is a cloud-based research platform that serves as a “scientific hub”, mapping the location of data, who has interacted with it, and why. By using Kaleidoscope to track how experiments relate to each other, companies can make better product and pipeline decisions, faster. The platform keeps R&D teams in sync by centralizing a bird’s eye-view of projects and data being generated, and automates outcomes through smart integrations with other software. This enables scientists to read from and write to the other tools in their tech stack, in an intuitive way, to enhance collaboration at each stage of the research process. Researchers can now plan and track scientific work across both wet lab and computational teams, enabling more closed-loop systems to accelerate R&D.

“The way people work in research is changing. Kaleidoscope bridges the gap between teams, on a platform that integrates with other software tools. The funding will enable us to deliver the best product and user experience to make research more collaborative, reproducible, and scalable,” said Bogdan Knezevic, Ph.D., CEO & Co-Founder, Kaleidoscope. “I’m thrilled to lead a team with co-founders Ahmed Elnaiem and David Yen to bring together diverse backgrounds across biology, engineering, and product design to build this foundational platform for the life sciences industry. We are building version control for science, to power tomorrow’s cures and scientific advances.”

“The decentralization of data and work, and rise of computation has created a void where life science companies have resorted to spending hundreds of millions of dollars to build subpar internal tools that are not sustainable or scalable,” said Brandon White, Head of Product at Spring Discovery. “Data capture and meeting notes that sync with other applications have changed the way we work, but in life sciences there is a huge unmet need for more accessible cloud-based tools, so scientists can save time and make critical decisions faster to accelerate research. Kaleidoscope is a much-needed solution to this problem.”

“Maintaining a single source of truth is critical in connecting and automating pipelines and workflows. Kaleidoscope is the connective tissue across wet lab and dry lab, integrating with the main tools of each arm to provide a holistic view of ongoing work,” said Pablo Lubroth, investor in Hummingbird Ventures. “There is an enormous amount of inefficiency and loss of productivity in manual data capture, disparate systems, and outdated tools. We’re extremely proud to support Kaleidoscope's next phase of growth to bring this much-needed solution to research teams.”

“We launched Dimension as a dedicated firm at the convergence of tech and the life sciences. Industry is going through a drastic transformation. Discovery and clinical translation are no longer driven from siloed one-off experimentation but rather are compounding from accelerating gains in scale of data, reproducibility, and fidelity of experiment,” said Adam Goulburn, Founding Partner at Dimension. “The outcome here is an urgent and inevitable prioritization of large-scale cross-disciplinary research coordination, where data is no longer an afterthought. Kaleidoscope is addressing this need and building the operating system for modern scientific research. We are so thrilled to partner with the team here and are already seeing tremendous early engagement from the industry on this product.”
