Yugabyte Expands Multi-Region Database Capabilities and Enterprise-Grade Security with YugabyteDB 2.5

Distributed SQL Database Adds Support for Geo-Partitioning, SCRAM-SHA-256 and LDAP Authentication, Auditing Support and Column Level Encryption

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--()--Yugabyte, the leader in open source distributed SQL databases, announced today the general availability of YugabyteDB 2.5 with major enhancements to multi-region deployments, enterprise-grade security features and performance improvements. The latest version builds on Yugabyte’s mission to provide the default distributed SQL database for cloud-native applications in a multicloud world.

As organizations deploy applications across multiple cloud regions to better meet user demand and comply with regulations such as GDPR, there is a need to distribute data across geographic regions. Alternative database solutions do not adequately address these requirements. With row-level geo-partitioning, synchronous and asynchronous replication capabilities, the ability to serve queries from the nearest geographic region and support for a rich set of security features, YugabyteDB 2.5 is the most comprehensive and secure open source distributed SQL database for multi-region deployments.

“With enterprises rapidly moving mission-critical workloads to the cloud, they need database solutions that can satisfy the demands of running geo-distributed applications with hundreds of thousands of transactions per second,” said Bill Cook, CEO, Yugabyte. “This latest release of YugabyteDB reinforces our commitment to innovation and delivering the leading open source distributed SQL database that is easy to scale and lowers the cost of enterprise data infrastructures.”

Key features of YugabyteDB 2.5 include:

  • Enhanced multi-region capabilities with geo-partitioning and follower reads: YugabyteDB 2.5 adds row-level geo-partitioning capabilities and follower reads to an already extensive set of multi-region features, such as the ability to perform synchronous replication across three regions and asynchronous xCluster replication across two regions. In totality, these features make YugabyteDB the most comprehensive distributed SQL database when it comes to multi-region deployments.
  • Enterprise-grade security features: YugabyteDB 2.5 also brings significant security enhancements to the platform. YugabyteDB 2.5 now supports the highly secure SCRAM-SHA-256 authentication standard to protect Yugabyte users against brute force attacks and packet sniffing. Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) support provides improved user management and the ability to audit all database operations. The 2.5 release also includes transparent data encryption and column-level encryption.
  • Simplified cluster administration: YugabyteDB 2.5 greatly simplifies running clusters, with support for dynamically rebuilding indexes on a cluster for both of its distributed SQL APIs – YSQL (fully-relational) and YCQL (semi-relational). YugabyteDB 2.5 also supports the pg_stat_statements extension, which enables tracking execution statistics of all SQL statements executed by the cluster, as well as pg_stat_activity, which shows information related to the activity performed by each connection.
  • 10x better performance in TPC-C benchmarks: YugabyteDB 2.5 also achieves significant performance improvements across key benchmarks. YugabyteDB can now successfully run a TPC-C benchmark against 100,000 warehouses, a 10x increase in warehouses as compared to previous releases.

Additional features of the YugabyteDB 2.5 release include support for all of PostgeSQL’s table-level partitioning schemes and the PostgreSQL trigger framework including event triggers.

All 2.5 features are open source and available to all under the Apache 2.0 license. Since announcing the company’s commitment to open source in July 2019, the YugabyteDB open source community has also exploded, now with more than 500,000 YugabyteDB clusters deployed, almost 2,000 members in the community Slack channel and more than 4,500 GitHub stars. Yugabyte remains uniquely in tune with the developer community through its open source database, and the company’s commercial products focus only on database administration, a departure from the industry-standard practice of “open core” where proprietary database features are upsold on an open source core.
