Alexandria Student Surprised With $25,000 Scholarship From Sallie Mae

Edison High School Student Receives One of Nine Bridging the Dream Scholarships

Scholarship Recognizes High School Juniors and Seniors Nationwide Who Excel Inside and Outside of the Classroom

NEWARK, Del.--()--Anas Tariq, a senior at Edison High School in Alexandria, Virginia, was surprised with a $25,000 Bridging the Dream Scholarship from Sallie Mae. Anas is one of nine scholarship recipients nationwide.

Nominations for the Bridging the Dream Scholarship were submitted by school and community leaders to recognize high school juniors and seniors who excel in academics, athletics, community service, or school activities but may face personal or financial challenges when looking to fulfill their college dreams. Anas was nominated by his high school counselor, Beth Gross.

“Anas is the kind of young person who inspires hope in the future of our country,” said Gross. “Smart and humble, Anas has given back to the community in so many ways, and I’m very grateful that he’s being given an opportunity to invest in himself through this Sallie Mae scholarship.”

An excellent student, Anas is a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, serves as vice president of the school’s chapter of DECA, and is secretary of the Muslim Student Association.

His hard work does not stop in school. Anas works at a restaurant part time while also helping to manage the family business. He served as a lead volunteer at the INOVA Alexandria Hospital Center, where he’s volunteered more than 200 hours. His goal is to become a doctor in the developing world and discover new advances in medical treatment.

“It’s clear that Anas has a bright future ahead of him,” said Nanette White, director, Sallie Mae. “We want to help him build a strong foundation to turn his dreams into reality. Providing opportunities, like the Bridging the Dream Scholarship, will empower Anas to open doors and help people, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for him.”

Since 2016, Sallie Mae has awarded $560,000 in scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students through the Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program. This year, $225,000 will be awarded, including $40,000 raised directly by employees.
