GigNet Network Uninterrupted During Massive Electrical Blackout in Yucatan Peninsula

Recently Completed 200-Kilometer Fiber-Optic Broadband Network and Network Operations Center in Cancun Fully Operational During Outage

CANCUN, Mexico--()--GigNet, an international managed broadband, Internet and WiFi service delivery company in the Mexican Caribbean, said today its 200-kilometer fiber-optic broadband network from Playa Mujeres to Cancun to Tulum continued to perform as designed during the region’s recent electrical service outage.

The Company’s new 5,000-square-foot office in Cancun and its Network Operations Center (NOC) – the first in Quintana Roo to offer local 24/7 network support for its customers – also was not affected by the blackout.

A power outage caused by a sugarcane plantation fire that affected the National Transmission Network of CFE left more than 85 percent of the Yucatan Peninsula without electricity last Friday. The electrical network, which is located in Ticul, Yucatan, affected power to Escárcega, Campeche, causing a massive power outage to the region's three states. On social media, the Federal Electricity Commission reported more than 1.6 million people were affected when power was lost.

“GigNet is the newest telecommunications network in the Mexican Caribbean designed specifically for hospitality and enterprise customers where a high level of reliability and service availability are essential. During the power outage the GigNet network automatically switched to standby power sources, with no interruption in the delivery of our high-speed dedicated Internet access service,” said GigNet Chief Technology Officer Michael Mahoney.

“Our superior, fully redundant fiber-optic network was up and on during the blackout,” said Eduardo Garcia, Director of Operators for GigNet in Cancun. “This is the kind of network performance our customers expect, and one we just demonstrated we are delivering.”

Garcia added, "Our goal is 100 percent up time for our clients. Our NOC services are thorough and comprehensive – from initial setup to 24×7 support to post-event analysis and reports. From this central location we can mitigate circuit issues, troubleshoot equipment problems, coordinate and dispatch field support if needed, and communicate with our customers.”
