Dr. Jennifer Beck of Orthopaedic Institute for Children’s Center for Sports Medicine Awarded Prestigious Fellowship From the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America

LOS ANGELES--()--Jennifer J. Beck, M.D., associate director of the Center for Sports Medicine at Orthopaedic Institute for Children, has been selected one of three 2019 Traveling Fellows by the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and the Asia Pacific Pediatric Orthopaedic Society (APPOS).

Through this fellowship, Dr. Beck will travel to Asia March 24-April 7, visiting hospitals in Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea and culminating with attending the Asia Pacific Spine Society/APPOS meeting April 4-6. During her trip Dr. Beck will collaborate with local hosts in sharing ideas regarding best practices in caregiving and will also present academic lectures to physicians from the host countries on the topics of “Mentoring in Orthopedic Surgery,” “Pain Management and Opioid Use in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery,” “Youth Marathon Running: Is it Safe?” and “Return to Sport Testing After Pediatric ACL Reconstruction.”

POSNA is a not-for-profit professional organization dedicated to advancing musculoskeletal care for children and adolescents through education, research, quality, safety and value initiatives, advocacy, and global outreach to children in underserved areas. Each year the organization sponsors traveling fellowships in conjunction with other international pediatric orthopaedic alliance societies wherein three POSNA members travel abroad, and three members of an alliance society tour North America to learn new techniques and exchange ideas while deepening POSNA’s international connection.

“I am incredibly honored to be chosen for this fellowship and excited about the chance to exchange ideas and learn new techniques from my colleagues in Asia about how to best care for children with musculoskeletal conditions,” said Dr. Beck. “At the same time I am looking forward to sharing what we’ve learned through the years at OIC regarding best practices that can be implemented by others so that children everywhere can grow well and play well.”

Both a practicing physician and a researcher, last year Dr. Beck joined with her colleagues from OIC to present at the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America’s annual meeting the first study of its kind concerning potential opportunities to reduce the use of opioid pills by patients following outpatient ACLR surgery. Also in 2018, Dr. Beck was one of three members of the OIC medical staff who presented clinical lectures at the 75th annual Brennemann Lectures sponsored by the Los Angeles Pediatric Society.

In addition to her role as associate director of the Center for Sports Medicine at OIC, Dr. Beck also serves as assistant clinical professor, UCLA/Orthopaedic Institute for Children Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles. She is a graduate of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago and did a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital as well as a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at OIC.

OIC’s Center for Sports Medicine is a state-of-the-art facility staffed by a multidisciplinary team, including sports medicine physicians, pediatric orthopaedic surgeons, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, athletic trainers and physical therapists, all focused on helping young athletes return to their sports activities as quickly and safely as possible. The center currently treats nearly 300 children each month—an 18 percent increase in cases over the prior year.
