Consortium for On-Board Optics Standards Detailed in New Coherent Data Center Interconnect Application Note

“Coherent COBO; CohOBO Applications” is a Guide for Coherent 400 Gbps Data Center Interconnect Applications

SAN DIEGO--()--The Consortium for On-Board Optics (COBO) today announced the availability of a new application note Coherent COBO; CohOBO Applications, detailing how to utilize the COBO standard in coherent Data Center Interconnect (DCI) applications.

The application note identifies CohOBO applications and details different use cases, module design considerations, management interface and other implementation details for developing COBO-based coherent networking equipment at 400 Gbps and higher capacities.

CohOBO solutions provide an advantage for networking companies building DCI networking equipment because they are designed to optimize airflow and lower the system power dissipation with modules in proximity of the switch silicon. In addition, CohOBO technology maximizes front-panel port density for 400 Gbps and higher capacity networks when compared to today’s pluggable optics alternatives.

Builds on COBO Specification

The application note was written by the COBO Coherent Working Group and expands on the COBO specification. The document focuses on Class C modules, which are designed to accommodate the necessary optical engines, digital signal processing (DSP) components and power-density required for a coherent solution.

“The DCI application is taking off as data center operators split their workloads among multiple data centers to keep up with growing demand for data,” said CohOBO Working Group Chair, Hugues Tournier of Ciena. “The use of COBO standard for coherent optical communications enables DCI technology to use the same footprint as short reach optics.”

COBO will be located in booth #1817 at OFC 2019 in the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA. The application note will be available online at http://onboardoptics.org/.
