ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--iChek, a pioneer in the development of active contact lens technology for glucose and hydration monitoring, is pleased to announce today the formation of its Medical Advisory Board (MAB) with two key appointments; David Klonoff, M.D., FACP, FRCPE, Fellow AIMBE and Joe Rappon, OD, MS, FAAO. Both are accomplished and well credentialed industry thought leaders. Dr. Klonoff is also the Chairman of the Diabetes Technology meeting being held in Bethesda, Maryland this week.
iChek’s active contact lens allows for real time glucose and electrolyte monitoring with low warm up time by simply shining a light onto the contact lens while on the eye. The iChek lens can provide visual correction like all current lenses or be with no optical correction. The light source will be from a small attachment to an iOS or android device that can collect, store (in the cloud), analyze, send, and present the objectively measured data to the user, care giver or physician. The technology was developed at the University of Maryland by a group of preeminent researchers.

David Klonoff, M.D., FACP, FRCPE, Fellow AIMBE Dr. David Klonoff serves as a medical director of the Dorothy L. and James E. Frank Diabetes Research Institute of Mills-Peninsula Medical Center in San Mateo, California and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF. He has over 280 publications. Dr. Klonoff has been a Principal Investigator on over 110 clinical trials of diabetes drugs and devices and has been lead investigator on multicenter trials for Novo, Sanofi, Medtronic, Biorad, and Diasome. He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology.
Joe Rappon, OD, MS, FAAO Dr. Joe Rappon joined SightGlass Vision after spending over 12 years at Alcon, the eye care division of Novartis. Dr. Rappon has a deep level of expertise in glucose monitoring devices and specialty contact lenses. During his time working with Alcon, Dr. Rappon held multiple roles, spanning several functional areas, including Clinical and Medical Affairs as well as R&D program management. Dr. Rappon is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and is board certified by the American Board of Optometry. He is a recipient of the Georgia Optometric Association (GOA) Young OD of the Year Award and the AAO Julius F. Neumueller Award in Optics.
