Public Urged to Help #STOPTrackTragedies During First North American Rail Safety Week

Every year, 2,100 North Americans are killed or seriously injured when they engage in unsafe behaviour around tracks and trains. Operation Lifesaver (OL) invites the media to attend a press conference marking the first day of Rail Safety Week 2018, and the official launch of #STOPTrackTragedies – a new rail-safety public-awareness campaign featuring video testimonials of people personally affected by railway crossing and trespassing incidents.

Speakers will include:

  • The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport (via pre-recorded video message)
  • Phil Verster, President and CEO Metrolinx
  • George Bell, Vice President Safety and Security, Metrolinx and Chair of Operation Lifesaver Canada’s Board of Directors

About Operation Lifesaver

Operation Lifesaver is a national public rail-safety program sponsored by Transport Canada, the Railway Association of Canada and its members, including CN, CP, VIA Rail, exo, Metrolinx, West Coast Express and Genesee & Wyoming, among others. Through partnerships with safety councils, police, the trucking industry and community groups, Operation Lifesaver works to save lives by educating Canadians about the hazards of rail crossings and trespassing on railway property.
