AHIP Board of Directors Announces Chairs for 2019, 2020

WASHINGTON--()--The Board of Directors of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) announced that David Cordani, President and CEO of Cigna Corporation, has been elected to serve as Chair of the Board beginning January 2019. Ken Burdick, CEO of WellCare Health Plans, will serve as AHIP Board Chair-Elect for 2019 and Board Chair for 2020.

These appointments build on AHIP’s commitment to improving the health and financial security of all Americans. Cordani and Burdick will succeed Bernard J. Tyson, Chairman and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, who is serving as Chair for 2018.

Since 2009, Cordani has led Cigna, spearheading the company’s evolution into a leading global health service company. He is a prominent voice addressing key health challenges, such as empowering individuals to manage their health, innovating new value-based models of care, and partnering with physicians to focus on integrated care and improved clinical quality.

Burdick brings 38 years of health care experience. Named CEO of WellCare in 2015, he leads the company in its mission to provide quality, cost-effective health care solutions for its Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, providers, and government customers. Under Burdick’s leadership, WellCare reinvested in the company’s people, processes and technology to strengthen its foundation and improve operational and financial performance. This approach has produced meaningful growth, higher quality, and operational and clinical excellence.

“David and Ken share Bernard’s strong commitment to finding new solutions that improve affordability, value, and access for coverage and care, as well as to enhance the well-being of patients and consumers,” said Matt Eyles, President and CEO of AHIP. “We are grateful for Bernard’s continuing and exceptional leadership, and we look forward to David and Ken leading our industry and helping navigate the rapidly changing U.S. health care system to ensure we deliver for all Americans.”

“Together, AHIP members are committed to a more proactive approach to consumer health and physician engagement, with an emphasis on more personalized products and services that help improve affordability and value,” said Cordani. “I am honored to work with Ken, Matt and the AHIP team as we engage with consumers and take action to advance solutions and private sector innovations that improve the health and financial security of America’s families, businesses and communities.”

“Our industry has a vision for a more patient and consumer-centered system that delivers more choices, simpler health care experiences, and better results,” said Burdick. “We will continue to work in partnership across the public and private sectors to achieve these goals and improve the health and financial security of individuals and families across our nation.”

“Over the past two years, we have continued to advocate for solutions so that health care works for every American,” stated Tyson. “I am grateful for the commitment of AHIP’s members to the people we serve, and I believe many great achievements are ahead as we continue to focus on health, value, choice and affordability.”
