The National Hispanic Medical Association Empowers Women and Girls for National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

WASHINGTON--()--HIV is a chronic disease that weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. The virus has no boundaries and effects all people regardless of race, gender and sexuality. Join the National Hispanic Medical Association for a Twitter Chat on March 6th, 2018 at 2 PM EST as we Celebrate #Girlpower and raise awareness for National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD on March 10). According to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, in 2015 women were 19% of the 39,513 new HIV diagnoses in the United States and among all women diagnosed with HIV 61% were African American, and 15% were Hispanic/Latina. HIV is a serious issue within minority communities, especially for women because of stigma and backlash that women face. During our Twitter chat we aim to discuss stigmas, statistics and solutions that minority women can use to empower themselves. Topics include getting tested for HIV, starting treatment (if HIV positive) or using Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) if HIV risk is high. Join the conversation on Twitter by following us on Twitter @NHMAmd and our co-host @HollywdHealth along with special help from our Twitter enthusiast @LatinaStrongDr. To follow the conversation use the hashtag #Girlpower and #NHMAHIV

The National Hispanic Medical Association is a national non-profit association representing Hispanic physicians who are dedicated to improving the health of our communities. Join us at our 22nd Annual Conference entitled “Conquistando el Futuro: Innovations for Hispanic Health” on March 22-24 at the Gaylord National Resort in Oxon Hill, MD to learn more about HIV/AIDS prevention from CDC’s Partnering And Communicating Together (PACT) to Act Against AIDS (AAA) team, and for a special HIV screening sponsored by Centene.
