FIU College of Business Launches Doctorate in Business Administration

Program set to begin in Fall 2018

MIAMI--()--Florida International University’s College of Business has opened applications for its first Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program, designed for top-level executives who are ready to achieve the highest level of academic and professional success.

The DBA program provides a new level of business education for those with an MBA or Master’s degree and substantial managerial experience in a business-related field. Over the course of six semesters, fall and spring, participants will complete intensive course and research work focused on applied business contexts. The three-year lock-step program will include four residencies of two days (Friday and Saturday) per semester.

The third year of the program will be devoted to conducting and completing a dissertation focused on an applied research problem. Unlike typical Ph.D. programs, DBA students may continue their work schedules and family obligations largely uninterrupted as they obtain their degrees. Using advanced educational tools in a high-tech online setting, the coursework, discussion, and colleague interaction will prepare each student for achieving the terminal degree.

“The DBA is designed to train high-level business leaders to manage and solve applied, real-world problems of today,” said Dr. George Marakas, Director of Doctoral Programs for the College of Business. “It’s a new level of innovative education for the South Florida business community and it brings the realization of achieving the highest academic recognition that can be achieved in business to all members of the business community.”

Under the guidance of College of Business professors, recognized among the nation’s top business research faculties, students will learn how to address, change and solve complex business problems. Classes will examine the development of theory and research logic, quantitative and qualitative analysis methods, issues in managerial context including international business, organizational behavior, marketing, corporate policy, finance and advanced technologies. In addition, students will explore the relationship between theoretical and empirical constructs, and learn specific applied research methodologies, including the scholarly publication process.

“The DBA is a strategic program for the business community that we serve,” said Joanne Li, dean of FIU’s College of Business. “Being able offer a terminal degree to our managerial workforce is modern education at its finest.”

She noted that a DBA graduate will be highly qualified for senior-level managerial positions within their current company or moving on into a bigger organization. “The road is changing and moving so fast that the higher the education you have, the more opportunities for advancement you will find.”

DBA graduates will be ready to apply their advanced knowledge to the advancement of decision-making and leadership in their chosen business context. Achievement of the DBA degree can greatly enhance consulting roles, contribute to senior management success, secure academic positions at a university or open the door to publishing in top business academic and applied journals.

The DBA program will begin in August, 2018 with the start of the Fall semester. There is a pre-requisite doctoral scholarship Professional Development Seminar, a six-week program that will run from mid-June through July. The preferred application deadline for the DBA program is May 15.

“The DBA is a terminal degree for people who want to advance their career through advanced knowledge or who wish to pursue a more academic path while continuing to meet their current career and family responsibilities,” said Marakas. “The successful applicant will be taking that last step to be truly an expert in business.”
