$1.2 Million in Grants Awarded by Medica Foundation to Health Organizations throughout the Upper Midwest

Funding Used for 2018 Programs that Serve about 200,000 People

MINNETONKA, Minn.--()--The Medica Foundation in 2017 awarded $1.2 million in grants to nonprofit organizations throughout the Medica Foundation’s service area, which includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and western Wisconsin. The Medica Foundation seeks to improve health by funding initiatives that are innovative in how care is delivered and have a high likelihood of creating long-term change.

“Health care is going through a period of change and we remain committed to the greater community during these challenging times, through support of our partners who improve health and remove barriers to health care services for those in need,” said JoAnn Birkholz, director of the Medica Foundation. “Each year we identify the areas of greatest need and help fund programs that support key health care initiatives in the communities we serve.”

Three examples of grants include:

  • St. David’s Center for Child & Family Development received a $40,000 grant to pilot a program to expand services designed to effectively address the complex behavioral needs and traumatic experiences of children with severe emotional disturbances and children in foster care.
  • Children’s Dental Services (CDS) received a $25,000 grant to provide a full range of culturally-targeted dental services to low-income children ages birth to 12 in St. Cloud with a focus on East African immigrants and refugees.
  • Pearl Battered Women’s Resource Center in Milaca, Minnesota received a $5,000 grant to support health related programming core to their mission.

Funding priorities for the Medica Foundation include behavioral health, early childhood health and general health improvement. In regional and rural communities, the Medica Foundation also focused on nonprofit core mission support.
