SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal has launched a new program that rewards members with Walmart gift cards for getting their yearly eye exams. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness. Blindness due to diabetic retinopathy is completely preventable with early detection and annual screenings. Alameda and Contra Costa Counties Blue Cross Medi-Cal members who complete their annual eye exams will be rewarded with Walmart gift cards that can be used to purchase healthy, nutritious items and earn additional rewards to combat the diabetes epidemic.
“Diabetes is taking a significant toll on people and families in California,” said Barsam Kasravi, MD, chief medical officer, Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal. “More than half of California’s population has diabetes or is at risk for developing the disease, which can lead to significant health issues, including loss of vision. Therefore, it is imperative that action be taken to improve the future health and lives of Alameda and Contra Costa residents.”
Following evaluation of the eye exams, Alameda and Contra Costa County members will be advised if they need to seek treatment to prevent their vision from worsening. After completing the exam, each member will receive a letter from Anthem with a $25 Walmart gift card that can be activated at Pursuant Health kiosks in participating Walmart pharmacies. Gift cards cannot be used to purchase alcohol, tobacco, firearms or e-cigarettes, but when they are used to purchase nutritional, healthy items, members can earn additional rewards for future health-related purchases. Additionally, when members activate gift cards, they will automatically be registered by Pursuant Health to receive health education text messages about diabetes and tips for managing their health.
This rewards program is available to all new and existing members of Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal health plan and can be redeemed at the following Walmart stores in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties:
