HemWell America Reports 2.6% of All Patients Who Think They Have Hemorrhoids Have Cancer

34% With Cancer are Between the Ages of 45-54

TAMPA, Fla.--()--HemWell America, Inc. (HemWell) www.hemwellamerica.com, an urgent care anal-rectal outpatient clinic company, focusing on hemorrhoid care and other anal-rectal issues, reported today that 2.6% off all patients seen at a HemWell location this year (2017) were found to have cancer. Over one-third (34%) of all cancers found were in patients aged 45-54, the report found. In addition men represented 78% of all patients found with cancer. The report uses a sample of 1,232 patients diagnosed, meaning that 32 patients had cancer.

“We knew that people were being diagnosed but were surprised by the statistically large number found to have cancer,” said Robert Sulzer, HemWell President. “Almost every patient walking into our clinics believes they have a hemorrhoid but so many other issues occur ‘down there’ that being diagnosed by a specially-trained professional is imperative.

“My advice to anyone with discomfort is don’t delay seeking care, it truly could save your life,” he added.

Sulzer added that people seek preventive care for their mouths and other personal areas of their body but unless a problem occurs in the anal-rectal region people don’t bother to be checked out on an annual basis. Hemorrhoids affect 82% of all people at least once in their lifetime. Many often live with the discomfort of hemorrhoids for years.

“We believe anyone with discomfort should seek immediate assistance and people 45 years and older should get checked annually,” Sulzer added. “Many physicians, or physician’s assistants, refrain from checking the anal-rectal region during annual physicals and often won’t even ask if the patient suffers discomfort. Most patients are afraid to speak up out of embarrassment so problems and pain continue.”

Under severe situations, patients visit urgent care centers where clinicians are often not qualified to make a proper diagnosis as well. Sulzer added that HemWell Clinics receive referrals from other urgent care clinics daily.
