Simply Healthcare Plans and the City of Miami Launch “I Heart Miami” to Improve Lives of Older Adults

5-week program offers Miami-area seniors activities promoting healthy lifestyles

MIAMI--()--Simply Healthcare Plans (Simply) and the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department will host this fall the I Heart Miami – a 5-week, interactive program that will give older adults tools and skills to improve their lives. The program – for individuals 55 years of age and older in the Miami area – will kick off on October 17 with a Senior Expo event at Theodore Gibson Park. Following this event, I Heart Miami will host interactive workshops, once a week, at five different area parks, covering topics ranging from healthy cooking to physical fitness to identity theft.

“Simply Healthcare Plans is honored to partner with the City of Miami in putting on I Heart Miami because we share a common goal – to support older adults in staying active so that they can live a healthy life,” said Tomas Orozco, Medicare plan president for Florida at Simply Healthcare. “It’s important that we encourage everyone – not just older adults – to adopt lifelong habits that will result in better health and well-being.”

On October 17, more than 20 non-profits and local organizations will be at the Senior Expo providing tools and resources to attendees on how older adults can lead healthier and more active lifestyles as well as stay safe. There will be areas for attendees to play games, such as dominoes and raffles, and take part in activities, such as cooking and fitness demonstrations. Refreshments will be provided at no cost to attendees. The Senior Expo begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. Theodore Gibson Park is located at 350 NW 13 Street, Miami, FL, 33128.

Individuals are welcome to come directly to Theodore Gibson Park. The City of Miami is also providing transportation from five area parks (listed below) for participants in the city’s senior program.

  • Charles Hadley Park – 1300 NW 50th St
  • Shenandoah Park – 1800 SW 21 Ave
  • Coral Way Community Center – 1300 SW 12th Ave
  • Antonio Maceo Park – 5135 NW 7th St
  • West End Park – 250 SW 60th Ave

“The I Heart Miami program, the Senior Expo, and subsequent workshops are just a few of the many ways the City of Miami is effectively serving our community and enhancing our residents’ quality of life,” said Zhaoming Guan, Superintendent of Recreation. “We are grateful that Simply Healthcare continues to be our partner in improving the health of the residents of Miami as well as all Floridians.”

After the initial event, I Heart Miami will host workshops discussing topics important to seniors, including physical fitness, nutrition, well-being, and safety. These workshops will take place on various dates in October and November at Charles Hadley Park, Shenandoah Park, Coral Way Community Center, Antonio Maceo Park, and West End Park. Please contact the parks department for the dates and times of the workshops.

Representatives from FLIPANY will lead the sessions about nutrition and cooking, physical activity, and stress management. The City of Miami Police Department will run a session on identity theft and fraud prevention.

The I Heart Miami program is a citywide effort for seniors and the elderly population to educate them on components for sustaining a healthy heart and other issues that impact the elderly, such as balanced nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and identity theft protection.

Individuals interested in attending any of these events are encouraged to register in advance. For questions about the I Heart Miami program or any of its events, please email parks@miamigov.com or call (305-416-1300).
