LONDON--()--Technavio’s latest report on the global anti-block additives market provides an analysis of the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2017-2021. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

The anti-block additives market is expected to increase at a CAGR close to 6% during the forecast period because of the increasing demand for agricultural output and packaged food products. The demand for anti-block additives from APAC is expected to be the highest among all the regions. The demand in this region is fueled because of the rising standard of living and increasing per capita disposable income of consumers.

Kurva Samba Sivudu, a lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in research on additives, adhesives, sealants sector, says, “Anti-block additives are used majorly in the food packaging industry and are expected to grow rapidly in the agricultural industry. With the increase in greenhouse cultivation, the demand for anti-block additives is increasing in the agricultural sector. These additives make plastic film layers less sticky by creating a rough surface on the top of a film layer that restricts the attachment of multiple layers.”

Government initiative for biodegradables

Anti-blocking additives are used in all types of plastic films to prevent stickiness in between polymer films. These additives have been used in various polymers like LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE, BOPP, and PVC. These additives provide anti-blocking properties and enable the easy processing of packaging. The anti-block agents create space between two plastic layers, thereby creating a block.

“The use of plastic films is restricted, under government regulations, due to environmental problems. The government has taken initiatives toward the development of eco-friendly and biodegradable polymers. It is expected that the government will soon enforce the use of biodegradable polymers made up of PBSA and PCL. The government in few countries has banned the use of plastics, thereby ensuring the use of biodegradable polymers by manufacturers,” according to Kurva.

High economic growth in the APAC region

The APAC region has exhibited remarkable growth in the last few years. This was characterized by a sharp rise in China’s and India economy. In the rest of the region excluding China and India, including countries like Southeast Asia, the growth is expected to rise slightly.

The anti-block additives market is expected to be driven by the growing demand for the easy availability of raw materials and increase in the disposable income of the residents. Also, the technological development in this region is high, which is encouraging the manufacturers to expand its business in the region.

Recycling of HDPE-based packaging products

The recycling property of HDPE-based packaging products has proved to be one of the biggest disadvantages of this market. Considering the environmental concerns associated with the use of plastic, the recycling of HDPE-based packaging products is in trend and is expected to rise in the forecast period. Very less or no anti-block additives are being used during the processing of products and recycling.

In the UK, HDPE bottles are collected for recycling. These recycled bottles are used to make garden furniture, litter bins, and pipes. The adoption of new technology will enable the recycling of HDPE into new milk bottles. Therefore, the demand of anti-block additives increases with the increase in the demand for HDPE packaging products.

The key vendors are as follows:

  • A.Schulman
  • Honeywell International
  • Imerys
  • Minerals Technologies
  • W. R. Grace & Co
