LONDON--()--According to the latest market study released by Technavio, the global shortwave infrared camera market is expected to grow at a CAGR of almost 8% during the forecast period.

This research report titled ‘Global Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) Camera Market 2017-2021’ provides an in-depth analysis of the market in terms of revenue and emerging market trends. This market research report also includes up to date analysis and forecasts for various market segments and all geographical regions.

The industrial manufacturing segment dominated the global SWIR camera market in 2016. SWIR cameras are also widely used in military and defense, scientific research and life sciences, and others, which consist of the commercial and automotive sectors. The price erosion of SWIR cameras has led to an increased adoption of SWIR cameras for commercial purposes such as automotive production process, video surveillance, military applications, and medical use.

The top three revenue-generating application segments of the global SWIR camera market are discussed below:

Industrial manufacturing

SWIR cameras are used for recording and monitoring in various production processes in the industrial manufacturing sector. They are used for checking product quality, performance, and monitoring. These SWIR cameras are used for thermal imaging of hot objects between the temperature range of 250°C and 800°C.

According to Jujhar Singh, a lead embedded systems research analyst from Technavio, “SWIR cameras are used for gas and fire detection in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, because of their high sensitivity to radiations. SWIR cameras monitor the gas meters and help detect inflammable gases, both indoors and outdoors, thereby enabling firefighters to carry out fire rescue operations promptly.”

Military and defense

The applications of SWIR cameras in the military and defense sector include major defense-based applications such as low/night vision, target acquisition, missile detection, and weapon and vehicle vision. Increased uses of SWIR cameras in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) for military and security applications will drive the global SWIR cameras market.

“SWIR cameras can operate starlight conditions, receiving adequate illumination from atmospheric nightglow. This nightglow is created by hydroxyl ion emissions. The wavelength of this nightglow falls in the SWIR portion of the spectrum, and hence, these cameras can provide the image efficiently,” adds Jujhar.

Scientific research and life sciences

SWIR imaging is used in various applications within the medical community. Making novel dental, epidermis, and ocular tissue inspections are few applications being explored till date. As human tissues are of relatively high transmission in the SWIR, it becomes an excellent wavelength range for analysis and is feasible for optical coherence tomography (OCT) applications beyond current wavelengths, thus taking advantage of good cell penetration and low sample heating of SWIR spectrum.

SWIR cameras are also used to detect unseen bruising in fruits, identify moisture levels, and indicate plant diseases invisible to the naked eye. They also detect the presence of small insects not visible due to their small size and protective coloration.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s research analysts in this report are:

  • FLIR Systems
  • Hamamatsu Photonics
  • Sensors Unlimited
  • Xenics
