Press Ganey White Paper Confirms the Quality of Health Care Is Improving

The Report Offers Five-Year Analyses of HCAPHS Overall Rating Trends and Identifies Top Drivers of Improvement in Top Box Score

BOSTON--()--Press Ganey today released its white paper, Performance Insights: Health Care Improvement Trends, with new analyses of five-year trends for the HCAPHS Overall Rating measure and year-over-year change on individual HCAHPS and Press Ganey patient experience survey items. The research shows consistent improvements in patients’ perceptions of their care experience, and offers insights into the specific types of improvement that are most likely to drive performance in patients’ global rating of their care.

The report also includes the results of a key driver analysis designed to identify those patient experience survey items most strongly associated with patients’ perceptions of their experience, and a separate analysis examining the relationship between the top three drivers and year-over-year improvement in hospitals’ Overall Rating scores.

What the data confirm is that health care is improving, despite the uncertainties in the health care industry,” said Press Ganey CMO, Thomas H. Lee, MD. “The findings also confirm the importance of measuring outcomes that matter to patients and organizing care delivery to improve those outcomes as effectively and efficiently as possible.”

Among the notable findings in the report, Press Ganey analyses show that

  • The percentage of patients giving their hospital top-box scores for Overall Rating has increased steadily since 2013
  • In aggregate, hospitals improved performance on nearly every HCAHPS measure between 2015 and 2016, with some providers showing greater improvement than others on certain measures.
  • Approximately 15% of hospitals moved to a higher performance quartile for Overall Rating between 2015 and 2016

The report identifies the strongest drivers of patients’ perceptions of their overall care experience based on an analysis of approximately 1.6 million surveys received in 2015. Of the hospitals with improved performance on all three of the top drivers from 2015 to 2016, 86% also increased their top box Overall Rating scores.
